I'm sitting here doing a little one handed typing. my left thumb got bit in a 280 mag and i've got the ice packs on it now. :(i don't think that it's broken but it sure did bleed with enthusiasm. stitches might be in order. i'll get a second opinion from wifey when she gets home. the good news is that it doesnt hurt when the trap closes. you dont feel a thing. ;D you do say a few things that might make baby Jesus cry. it is starting to get a bit of a throb on right now. :'(it could be worse. i got my selfout and i'm safe at home. skinning tonight might be a hassle, though. be careful. just before it happened i was telling myself,"watch it." a little ice on a jaw is all it takes. i'm sure this will be funny .....one of these days.

Might take a few weeks for it to be funny.
When I wore that BMI MAG 220 that time it was not funny for weeks.
I finally saw the humor in it but not for a while.

I broke my wrist in a 280 several years ago, and your right, it hurts for a minute, goes numb, but just wait....the pain is coming later. Those pricks need close attention and respect.

It's not broken. I can wiggle it and tap the end without screaming. My wife says that a normal person might go to the hospital for a few stitches. I have a medical stapler or two, so I might put a few in. It's on the joint so it's an awkward spot. I'll decide after skinning tonight. The only point to stitches is for it to heal faster.
BTW: I switched from the ice packs to a cold brew held in the left hand. It gives things a different perspective! I'm a little worried about tomorrow, but reading about your experiences I think that I was real lucky in my mishap.
Gotta love these new norms.Save the critters, maim the trapper.

My advice is to see an orthopedic doc that specializes in hand sugery. You'll be up chit-creek if the joint capsule has been injured or comprimised. Very likely that there is ligamentous injury and that could really reduce the longterm use of your thumb.
Look, the opposable thumb is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. If your thumb gets infected or the joint capsule and/or neurovascular bundle is injured you could lose that thumb. After about 8 hours, it is unwise to close any wound...during that time it has gotten colonized by bacteria. I would not, absolutely would not, put any staples into it.

Hmmm I am sitting here looking at the small scar on the knuckle of the middle finger on my left hand. I did that when I was seven. It hurt from when it went snap and for a couple of weeks later.

Randy: I didn't staple it. I put one in and it was sticking out too much.
I think I was lucky. I can wiggle it and I probably could bend it but I don't want the bleeding to restart. Also there's no way I'd ever see any kind of orthopedic doc for about 3-4 months. THIS IS CANADA! The best i could have seen is the emergency room doc. They might have put in stitches but who knows.
Today it's still swollen and if i bang the gashed part it hurts. The underside and tip are fine. If the cut wasn't there it wouldn't be an issue. but I also think that if the cut wasn't there my thumb would be way more swollen and sore. my tetanous shot is up to date and I washed it well. As long as infection keeps away all will be well.
Thanks.
BTW: thumbs are really handy to hold up the bottom of sandwiches!

Hey Musher...glad to hear things are going OK with your thumb. I have seen alot of minor cuts and punctures turn into devastating wounds. all depends what kind of bacteria get a foothold. sounds like you did all the right things.
Some people in this country want a Candanian-style healthcare system. LMAO.. Yeah...'nuff siad.
PM me if anything changes

Was it an LDL Mag ? I got my wrist in one about five years ago and it still makes clicking noises. Doc said he didn't know what the clicking was but he figured it would make a neat conversation piece. LOL. Hope the thumb heals up fine. Jim

one of my guest did the thumb in a 280 Belisle, luckily for him, I was right there with the coni-setters, and most importantly, one the safety latches was on so one spring only.
He got pale, but did not faint. Nice as I am, all I could say was:
"I think this is the first thing this brand new 280 has ever caught. "
followed by
"I'm glad it's you and not me."
Same to you musher!!!

Got my thumb in a MB650 a couple days ago. Now got 4 stiches to show for it - ill post a pic in a few days.
Do you have feeling on the sides of your thumb and on the tip? If not there might be some nerve damage. These questions from my doc are still fresh in my mind - LOL.

I've got feeling everywhere. It's still oozing a little but there's quite a gash on it. All looks good.
Frenchman: I untrapped myself one handed. No safety's held. Luckily my setters were close. There was a gap in the jaw. that saved me. I caught a weasel in another 280 and it's skull is in 2 pieces. Close call. No lesson learned.
You don't want the Canadian medicare system as it is right now. If you do, Randy, move here. You'll have a job in about 20 minutes.

I whopped my thumb in 4 coiled brid no 2 about 4 days ago, and had to pull it out as i couldnt compress both springs and couldnt stand on a lever on the 45 degree greasy bank. I cut it a little and started pussing up and getting sore, and yesterday did the same damn thing on same spot, now a piece of hide about dime sized missing and hurts like hell.

ah yes shocklung- better to have a system where 65% of its citizens get basically no medical care for lack of insurance- and to be held in a strangle hold by pill makers and insurance companies- yeppers and add to that our poor quality of care- our system here is just peachy!

Does your thumb look anything like this? Caught it in a MB650C. Was suprised it cut me - never seems to cut the yotes - LOL. Was bedding the trap i.e. twisting it into loose dirt and I guess my thumb pressed against the pan. Had a glove on so couldn't feel what I was touching. When the trap sprung my hand was accross the lever and it slid my thumb along the jaw as it came up - I think that is how I got the cut.

That doesn't seem possible to me. Between group health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and the few suckers that actually buy individual policies (like myself), I don't get it. But even considering ZERO insurance at all, I can still walk into the local clinic in my town and see a doctor within an hour or two. Yes, I will have to plunk down $75 for the office visit, but at the end of the day I still saw a doctor when I needed one.

The doc sewed it up right in his office. Took about a hour. I have insurance though. Had a $20 copay I charged on the MSA card.
