Does anyone know a supplier to purchase bulk borax? Like 5 gallon pails #40 /#50 or 55 gallon drums of this material.

I have checked into this in the past as well and failed.....I look forward to the answer, and hopefully, results on this question......
I go to the grocery store and buy 8-10 boxes at a time......the 19 year old cashing me out thinks I am nuts. OR, super clean.

I collect from wine makers 2000-3000 # of grape pressings and bulk red meat that I store in 55 gal drums each fall. I obviously don't have time to grind and work up the base materials at this time of year as I am doing other things like trapping and traveling. I use the Borax to preserve the bases until I am able to get to them in the spring. Had been using Benzoate but has become cost prohibitive to do so with the volume that I need to work up.
There is enough hydration in the material I so I just layer the borax into the barrels and stir briefly for reasonable product contact. This method will prevent the base from breaking down while sitting for several months.
I appreciate the help with the link. I will research the cost and shipping. Thank you BJ

Pricing seems real good on 100#. The stinger is the cost to ship to me. I bet the shipping is more then the product per 100 weight.
I will contact them I have their catalog never got alot from them just a few tanning products.
Thank you. BJ

Bob:
Bristleback, Corey and myself will be passing through Boron, California (the place where they mine Borax) on our way to bear hunt in late November. If you could talk one of them into packing a suitcase full to bring back on the plane, I'll bet we could get you some cheap. It's just laying around on the ground there. Of course, they'd have to explain to airport personnel why they were carrying a suitcase full of white powder . . . . . .

I'd pay to watch the three of you guys go through airport security!!! LOL!!!
That would be some fast talking to get out of that one!

Great Idea Hollywood, I have alot of getting even to do with DK, he's always pulling something on me. I have a feeling you guys in Nevada will see a large influx of game crossing from Cali heading east when we are out there, Dk's snoring should send everything packing one way or another, i'm sure alot of the scared animals will run east into Nv. ;D

That sounds like a great idea. I will be out in kansas in January I could pick it up once the booty transfer is made from the suitcases. You could probably carry on 30- 40# each I would think. The rest you could carry in your pockets and if you wear hip waders under your baggy pants that would give you another 30 -40 # carrying capacity. Cant imagine trying to explain that if you were stopped,

I'll see how much I can sneak into DK's bags for you Bob...LOL
I should video tape this borax smuggling for Hollywood's Bobcatching II DVD, it would add some more levity to his DVD.
Bob J. i've been meaning to ask you if that Ricky came through for you??

Bob:
How does the borax as the prescriptive work for preserving the grape squeezing, do you mix it with all the grapes or can you put it in an airtight container and put the borax on top of it?

For any preservative to work effectively it must make good material contact either through stirring it in , electric mixing or making it flowable to blend through the material by perculation.
I stir my borax into the base as I load the material into 35 gallon garbage containers. Much easier to do as you go, then in trying to blend too much at one time. Borax dissolves quite easily with just a little amount of moisture as do other preservatives that are a smaller grain type.

I have found 100# locally available from an old timer that use to supply taxidermy shops. It is older material but it will do nicely to get started. The price is right.
