Okay this is just a guess so nobody laugh at it. Did they use it and the bottom half of the barrel to make a deal like a portapotty?

It's from a grease barrel.The grease was used for the wagon wheel hubs.

Mercury in the bottom being heavy would latch on to the gold while the other gravel would be washed out---? You can still find mercury in streams in this area. Left over from the prospecting days.

The bottom of the barrel was used as a quicksilver bath to separate the mercury from the gold. The top of the barrel was used to boil off the mercury and to condense it for reuse. Throw us another bone here T-man. We're stumped!

I’ve really enjoyed this tread and all of the guessing, especially the one by mustelameister on the 18th. As to your clue to look to the heavens for the answer, was the rest of the barrel used as a coffin?
