Latest FFG has top select coon going for 10.00 and avg prices around 4.00-6.00 , not sounding good for a coon market this fall at all! When the trapping mags start showing these prices paid, I guess one can think the market will be poor!!!! I'm wondering if coon harvest numbers stay within 20%-30% or so of last year and a lack of interest again from the russians what will that do for next years coon market? ? Could we be seeing coons at 1.00-3.00 avg???

best thing that can happen is everyone hang the coon traps up for a season or two and just sell incidentals and turn as many of those loose as possible, thats what I intend to do this year. this would be a short term fix because as soon as the market strengthened, then you would see everyone come back out and probably a lot of stored skins come on the market...

My buyer told me he was starting at 13.00 tops and dropping quick from there. That's the same as he paid last year. I think the coon market will remain stable. The harvest will be down this year because of gas prices alone. Throw in an early winter in the "coon states" and we'll see even fewer coon on the market. I'm not going to start wringing my hands yet.

It has been a while since I have read a mag, particularly FFG,but if I remember correctly, they are usually hopelessly *OP*tomistic with their price fantasies.............if that is the case here,be ready to give away those 13 coon...........no new traps for *YOU*,Buddy!

I hope everyone stays home. I'm going to be out there just like all ways. When prices are down you just have to catch more fur, It's just that simple. Any talk about coon prices at this time is just speculation.

Most of my coon are incindentals in beaver sets but I do set for coon to keep them out of beaver sets, so I guess I'll still have 20 or 25 coon to sell this year. Not a lot of coon around here.

talked to North America at WI, and they seemd to thing MN/WI type coon, and generally northern their at prices similar to last year- and I can live with that.
canines- also about the same for this region. and, as it goes- so are mink.
rats big gainers-
one thing to remember- is FFG reports are what the AVERAGE country buyer would be expected to pay for fur.
as beav says- increase production. Northern trappers could no more stop trapping coon than southern trappers could of cats and otter

I plan on trapping even harder this year and only going for the bigger coon. They also said in FFG that it costs about4.50 cents to put up carcass coon. Well, I'm getting my coon put up for a buck. I guess I can start counting that extra 3.50 on every coon. ;D JP

Hit the rats, if you have them. With our drought, many of the marshes are dry.
Coon, I am not expecting much. I am debating between coon or shooting some more ducks.
I am hoping mink will go up some this year.

t-man, as said 100 times or more, you guys up north in that little part of the country have the best coon and those will likely be worth trapping, i bet all you guys up there would sing a different tune if you trapped the coon I trap, I intend to avoid them like the plague, no fun and just a lot of greasy work....w

Southern coon are very weak unless you find a meat market now if I can get between 8 to 10 bucks in the round.I will stop and set a few conibears in trails to help some on the gas anyway.

Around here what I would consider a small coon gets graded XXL or 3XL. Kinda hard to turn down trapping a few coon this season. Probably throw out a few 160's.

Like I said on another post,I'll skin'em if their in a cat set and they are probably worth as much as the coyotes that I am able to catch around my house, but I enjoy trapping coyotes.I will roll a bunch of big coon to my dogs and those will be skinned aswell.Trapping coon is only a numbers game for me and the numbers don't add up this year. There has really only been about 5 years over the last 20 that coon were worth the attention around here.

winston- I know southern coon aren't work much..... but most of you seem to have a meat market- something we don't have here.
Was there EVER a time southern coon brought anything more than a $ or two before the fur boom? From what I can gather- no. Southern coon just aren't much- the best thing for the coo nmarket would be if all the southern trappers put minimal coon on the market- causing the numbers to drop significantly and the good and medium coon market to rebound.
you guys have limitless cats and otter- a good trade off for coon prices...

well, t-man, per your recommendation above, you can sleep well knowing I will comply this year, I think a lot more as well due to gas prices....I agree we have a good tradeoff, that is why I have been on top of the otter the past 3 years, Im guessing we only have a couple more wide open season before a limit is imposed, they are getting whacked hard down here..maybe a rough winter would be a blessing in disguise to lower the harvest for most and let more get by this year.....w

In the face of the high trap line operational costs this idea may sound crazy but I am going to try this again this year. With most if not all corn gone this year patterns will be different. WI, MN, coon early will have a huge spread. I am guessing that about Oct 20-25 that adult coon 32 plus will be 10-16 dollars green and maybe $5 more put up and sold in Feb etc. The small coon and late litter females will be 0-6 with an average of 3$ probably. If I trap randomly and go early with about a 50-50 split I should not expect to average more than 6-8 for the run of the average coon. I can either start later and maybe add $1-$ per coon or I can go on Oct 20th and work hard at being selective early and then run the avoided family hot spots a month later for the 2nd round. If I could catch 100 early coons in the first week with a 60 mile loop I would earn say $700. By being selective lets say I catch 60 and they sell for $700. If I go back later and catch 25 more and now they sell for $8 I cover the cost and also run my canine line to boot. Waiting is only one strategy that you can use. Learning to trap the more desired animals earlier is another tool. I need to manage my trap line so that it fits my needs. The fur buyers buy my fur they do not manage my line. That is my responsibility. Many of the smaller buyers did not sell last years collections. They are hoping for a short harvest this year. One way to raise their Vallie is to offer low early prices so the catch goes down and the value of their inventory rises w/o buying any fur. If they buy low enough they can lower the average pelt price and make a small profit. I can put higher quality goods then their averages on the market by managing my line. Bryce

I didn`t trap them last year and have no intentions of doing such this year. I don`t mind trapping for free or near free, but by golly, if that is the case then it won`t be on any no skill needed fatball drudgery animal. it will be on coyotes ,and hope I can dink enough cats to cover a little profit on fur. I`ll keep the big incidental coon, but sell for whatever carcase price is. not going to lett the fushead steal my time canine trappiung by skinning and working pennys/hour stuff. Might sell 30-40 junbos and no more-if I`m lucky! fwiw, if I lived in that small n dak/mn./wisc/ northern iowa country, I`d probably trap a quick 100 or 2 too, but I`m like winston, indiana coon will run about 1/2 what the good ones in the north country bring- just not worth my time. I like the canines and cats too much to fritter away limited time and rescources on anything else.
