On June 1, President Barack Obama appeared at a town hall in Elkhart, Indiana, for PBS NewsHour. After the broadcast, the President took questions from audience members and his answer to a question about gun control stood out for many.
Doug Rhude, a gun shop owner, challenged President Obama's record on gun control. Arguing that irresponsible people in our society are accountable for actions such as drinking and driving without having cars taken away from "the good guys," "why then do you and Hillary want to control and restrict and limit gun manufacturers, gun owners and responsible use of guns and ammunition to the rest of us, the good guys, instead of holding the bad guys accountable for their actions?" Rhude asked.
President Obama didn't hold back in his response to Rhude. "First of all, the notion that I or Hillary or Democrats or whoever you want to choose are hell-bent on taking away folks' guns is just not true," he said.
Obama attempted to set the record straight: "And I don't care how many times the NRA says it.I'm about to leave office. There have been more guns sold since I have been president than just about any time in U.S. history. There are enough guns for every man, woman and child in this country. And at no point have I ever, ever proposed confiscating guns from responsible gun owners. So it's just not true."
He continued in his explanation:
"What I have said is precisely what you suggested, which is, why don't we treat this like every other thing that we use? I just came from a meeting today in the Situation Room in which I got people who we know have been on ISIL Web sites, living here in the United States, U.S. citizens, and we're allowed to put them on the no-fly list when it comes to airlines, but because of the National Rifle Association, I cannot prohibit those people from buying a gun."
As gun violence becomes more and more prevalent in the U.S., the president has taken executive action to fix this problem. He unveiled his plan to cut gun violence in January, accusing the gun lobby of holding Congress hostage.

if a lie is repeated often enough, and loud enough, it becomes fact to some.

Yeh I know and I wonder why Obama keeps lying? Some think he is telling YOU the truth...........................
Why did he not goi into more detail on the no fly list people as individuals and what has happened to cause them such? That would lead into their chances of passing a 4473 background check instead of thr slick way he worded such. Also gun ownership is protected by the constitution flying on an airplane is not.
Everyone "can" own a gun or drive a car or ride an airplane or many other things unless your break the laws and forfeit those abilities.
If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor of domestic assault you are not inside the confines of federal law to pass a 4473 background check. Lying on the federal form can get you thrown in jail as well. Adjudicated mentally defective and or illegal of the US precedes you from buying a gun as well. Yet some how illegals still find ways to vote in some states? Let's clear that up the same way we have stopped that from happening with firearms purchase from an FFL dealer.

so if someone is on a no fly list (and you don't just appear magically on such a list, and yes, mistakes are made) then it seems silly to me, that they can buy guns.
the fact that some have zero compromise (and like the NRA plays game after game) is why you have trump as your candidate. Good luck with that. you reap what you sow.
but please- quote the words my President used in his 'slick way" to mislead you.
put up time..........

Tman how do you know or Obama knows they qualify for a gun purchase? Please answer me that with a facts? Many could also have a criminal record which would preclude them from Legally buying a firearm. Case by case basis. If they are on a NO fly list they could be on the NICS list. I sold guns and many be receive a denial upon phone call not all of them have felonies others things will keep from getting a proceed with sale at the point of,purchase for a period of time as well, that is a fact.

What Obama and others are trying to do is put guns in the light of other actions people may or may not do depending on legal issues, but man he states, " I mean they can't even fly on a plane, but they can buy a gun"! In his kind he is telling people we should allow them to fly and kill possible 100's of people, versus buying "A" gun. Yet he is for gun owners, that is a crock pure BS. He took excutive orders on guns and gun rights.
Hillary is no fan of gun owners and for anyone to think so is just plain dilusional.

In his kind he is telling people we should allow them to fly and kill possible 100's of people,
or could it be if someone is on the no fly list because he is too dangerous to allow on a plane, it might be silly to allow him to buy guns?-
you remind me of a trapper that sets 220s in a park, and then is outraged when restrictions are put on 220s
why don't you tell me how we need more mental health agencys and that will prevent much of this (and I agree, it will!)- and then, like Brick on "The Middle" you will lower your head and say 'no funding"....cause YOUR party, keeps reducing funding- its the classic case of saying one thing (such as we HAVE laws on the books, and that's true, but legislation WRITTEN BY THE NRA and forced through congress prevents the very laws THAT THE NRA HELPED WRITE YEARS AGO TO HAVE CHECKS AND CONTROLS) but doing another.
and so, like my trapper friend- don't cry to me because you get very restrictive laws-
your attitude and the attitude of no compromise, no common sense will bite you in the ass.

Compromise has become the dirty word of politics. The sad reality is that the major political talk show hosts, representing both sides, will absolutely vilify anyone from their party who reaches across the aisle to try and accomplish something. These politicians aren't stupid, they know the power many of these political commentators have over their base. The last thing they want in a closely contested election year is to be getting repeatedly called out as weak by a political commentator who represents their own party. The result...political gridlock.
I find it humorous, and at the same time frustrating, that many who are so against political compromise are the same ones who continuously moan that politicians never get anything accomplished.

Tman keep drinking. The left kool aid. So you even know how much is spent on NICS back ground checks in a given year? Any idea at all? You sound like the great Tom Daschle from SD would come through at election time and tell all the Indian reservations you vote for a republican all I have gotten for you will be gone, the problem is what did he really get them? A society relaying on. The federal govt for daily survival and living well below the poverty level. Nice life yeh ok.........
Guns laws in the books are used each and every day, that is just a fact. The states need to make sure that doctors are reporting such information down the info pipeline. Problem is patient confidentially and their lack of reporting mental issues so it can show up on the system. That is not a money thing but a people thing, just like who decideds to take a firearm and commit crime.
No gun has ever stood up and shot someone, never ever.
You keep thinking this is a money issue and money will fix it along with restrictions, states have tried such and has failed BIG TIME, it is fact and can be proven.
Gun owners have compromised a lot through the years, in FACT look back into the 60's and prior we had no 4473 background checks and you could order guns online or pick up in the store with a simple form and we had far less gun violence than today. So please tell me where all of this paper work is the key? It is about people and how they have changed through the years period. We have accepted background checks and they help, but again to think any more gun legislation will help is false and just more burden put on the legal gun owner.
What did clintons AR and magazine ban do in the 90's? Nothing, what has California's and Illinois crazy and tough gun laws done for gun crime? Nothing .
So for people to sit here and tell gun owners all we need is comparmise on guns and more money and things will be better is plain BS, just the facts. How are they the facts look at the states with the toughest gun control laws and their gun violence compared to those states with more Liberial guns laws. There is NO denying or going against these facts. Your on the left side and continue to spew the montra that money and more restriction makes for a better USA. Sorry not buying that due to facts.
The 2nd amendment still protects legal gun owners today and I hope in the future.
We have 20 trillion in debt and how much more are people willing to add to try and spend our ray to safety and prosperity? That has never nor ever will work, but bring us further down and more govt dependent. The govt is not the answer to our ill's people are.

What will bite me in the ass is trying to let liberials tell ME and millions of others what is BEST for US and keep those liberials safer LOL. The Liberial states have the highest gun violence rates in the USA FACT. They live in a fantasy world thinking legislating and mandating is the way the world will become prosperous and safe. That has never happened period.
Key election comming up for sure, I hope people see the light if not we can continue down the toilet, the voters will decide. We can keep loosing or liberties or add trillions more of debt and become more govts dependant or we can take charge of our lives and quit blaming objects for the woes of life.

Liberial mindset, when a couple who own a cake business refuse to make a cake for some people based on religious beliefs they have, that is called a hate crime by many people on the left, when ISIS related guy decides to shoot people in a gay nightclub that then becomes a gun issue. "Amazing is all I can say"

"The Liberial states have the highest gun violence rates in the USA FACT" Which of these liberal states are you referring to TC? States with the most gun violence (including homicides, suicides and accidents) Listed from number 10 to number 1: South Carolina New Mexico Alabama Arkansas Montana Oklahoma Wyoming Alaska Mississippi #1 Louisiana www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/29/states-gun-violence_n_5541292.html

Pam do you even read the BS you post? Look at those numbers and how they do their math yeh right . What a bunch of BS. Montana and Wyoming higher than Illinois or California or DC no way no how not in a million years. I go to St Louis a lot and ai can tell you my rate of being shot on the east and North side of ST Louis is far,far greater than any where in the state of SD,ND,WY or MT combined. That is a fact! Suicide means little in gun violence stats otherwise why not just make guns illegal all together? Wait people would still find ways to kill themselves without guns LOL. Violent gun crimes are homicideds and robberies and such, ye the good ol CDC which some are trying to force those to be the numbers, "um hum " the liberials want to show falsehoods when it comes to gun stats. Just use the FBI data and one will see your numbers are way off the mark. Looks the FBI reports and one will see knives cause more violent death by 5 times higher than a rifle ! Where is the outcry for background checks on knives in this country? www.quandl.com/data/FBI/WEAPONS11-US-Murders-by-Weapon-Type

Blunt objects and personal attacks killed more people than a rifle in the US.
Your numbers are fuzzy, fuzzy left leaning Mumbo jumbo.
Reminds me of the late 80's early 90's scare of using 2,4D and how many people it claimed to have killed by the anti chemical crowd. Had people all worked up for a period of years, many kids will die if we use this on our lawn LOL. Still in use today.
They called on people and if the person was deceased and was someone who might have used 2,4D on a farm "their best guess" by the way, they marked them down as a death related to 2,4 D LOL. That info wasn't made public for a few years later.
Then you have the great state of Illinois that does the worst job of reporting to the FBI their true gun violence numbers, I wonder why? We all know why a rhetorical question really.
Then the CDC wants to come up with some math, artical formulation that takes suicides into account with gun violence, when all we hear is how we need to stop these mass shootings and gun violence in general. A joke are those numbers. Period. They are trying to skew results and I don't buy that for a second. The FBI deals in crimes and crime numbers and data, they do not care if left or right. They give you the raw data if a person dies unwillingly they show you how and by what weapon. As long as the states are reporting such in the first place, say hello Illinois LOL.

talk about BS-
if TC EVER posts actual facts, rather than madeup crap- I'll circle it on calendar for prosperity. and would any discussion be complete, without Tc's red herrings? You wouldn't know a fact if it bit you in the ass.
and anyone that refuses to bake a cake- is a POS and to call their beliefs religion is a sin
go ahead TC- keep setting those 220s in public parks!
good news though- GOP is down to lowest approval rating ever- 35% and fully 70% of the population will never vote Trump. getting kind of lonely isn't it?

"Look at those numbers and how they do their math yeh right"
They do the math as a percentage per 100,000 people. Obviously CA and IL have a lot of gun violence but they also have cities with over a million in population unlike Montana which has a little over 1 million people in the whole state. Chicago has almost 3 million people living in the city.

the point that is missed when so many point to Chicago- is that Chicago, and Il aren't islands. its not illegal for a IL resident to buy a gun in another state
the premise of " laws don't stop those really wanting a gun therefore we should do nothing." really rings hollow.
Have any of those reading this, been denied buying a gun?
I never have- and if a long haired, biker, trapper can buy legally...............

Pam don't care if they want to break it out by 100,000 or a million the numbers do not make sense until they add in suicide and conform them to an agenda. Again violent crime is not the same in Montana in any city compaired to larger cities, so the math is skewed plain and simple to fit an agenda. The FBImhas no agenda, speak to the facts that knives have more homicideds ie murders than do rifles in this country, so why are we not doing background checks on knives?
Tman you cannot be denied of buying a gun because of the 2nd amendment we all have the opportunity unless we have committed a felony, or misdemeanor charge of domestic violence or an illegal residing in the US. All 3 of those stop the process upon a yes answer on the form period. Also handgun sales are illegal across state lines. Rifles and shotguns you have to look at what states can be sold to depending on such state.
What Illinois does is not allow anyone from another state to conceal and carry in that state, mthe also make people have a card to purchase ammunition. These are all silly rules and regs that do nothing to restrict gun violence, just make it harder for people to make legal purchases that is their mind set, they figure if it gets to be too big of a pain they limit gun and a mention sales to people in general, violent crime is the montra the goal is to lessen sales of guns and ammo period to anyone and everyone. The Liberial way.
The premise is wrong and why would we want to enact more rules and regulation if it does NOTHING to stop the justification for such new rules and regs? Just to say we did it? NOPE to limit people and their ability as a legal citizen and try and hamper the constitution yet again.
Tman doesn't matter what you look like, if your a biker, trapper etc. your background is what determines your ability took purchase. Also if you have a restraining order against you , go try and buy a gun and see if you go home that day with such gun. You will either be placed on a hold of a denial the highest majority of the time.. Safe guards are in place many just do not know they are there. Straw purchases are also illegal and can be called in and investigated by the ATF as well.

sorry- I;'m going ot have to yell.
IT IS ABSURD TO CONTINUE TALKING ABOUT PRESENT LAWS, AS IF THOSE LAWS WERE BEING ENACTED.
BUT ANYONE THAT TAKES EVEN A MINUTE TO ACTUALLY CHECK FACTS, CAN TELL YOU THAT IT IS A CATCH 22 SITUATION
and that the laws aren't being enforced for 2 reasons 1) funding and staffing (cut by the GOP) and 2) some laws actually legally cannot be enforced.
pb[Tman you cannot be denied of buying a gun because of the 2nd amendment we all have the opportunity unless we have committed a felony, or misdemeanor charge of domestic violence or an illegal residing in the US.[/b[
cool. oh wait....unless you go to a gunshow, or buy one on the internet, or craigslist. then you can buy anything you want, without ANY background check.
silly facts...
