Well 3 years have passed and the BMP's continue on and to date no state has mandated them from the inception of testing in the 90's. Lots of good information has come from the BMP's and the testing done to date. Again the skunks falling attitude some have had towards these studies has yet to surface. many new BMP's have been tested and the reports can be found on this website. I think 18 species have been tested to date, various coyote traps and others where tested this season, along with some other cable restraint types of cable and locks. fishwildlife.org/?section=best_management_practices

the coon bmp is still as bogus today as the day it came out
and much of the rest is silly, at best. for example, mink- 2 footholds were tested- #1 victor coil, and a #11 SC double spring
I know a lot of mink trappers- don't know any that use either of those traps as their go to mink trap
once again, you feel the need to have ALL bmps ordained as the saviors of trapping, when most I've read, sans the coyote one, are meaningless

Tman savior a nope, but helps in our quest to continue trapping yes.
Tman species and time is what has shaped the list of traps tested to date.
Not meaningless shows the value of continuing research and keeping the testing in the eye of the general, public all the data and testing is a positive for trapping, savior nope, as trapping is still regulated state to state.

It helps because we have science based information getting out to the general public on traps and testing. Wr keep it in the forefront in many regards many game agencies use this information compiled to,inform their personnel many who are not trapping savy. They know and understand data and data collection. it helps........ I have seen it first hand.
We have gained more credibility within game depts across the nation and more with the general public. The brochures, dvd's and printed documents all lend positive to trapping.
Time and money for two traps and they also did some more cable restraint studies as well. Only so much time and money if the budget was larger and Bryant White had more time more would get done on an annual basis. A trap check off is something I feel would be of great help to support things like the BMP's and other outreach to the general public.
AFWA carries pretty good clout in DC as well.

A vast multitude of members in AFWA and covering many conservation user groups.
Plus the website under furbearer management has a lot of useful information for people as well.

if you ask 100 people on the street, 100 would have no knowledge of this
as far as listing game depts and clubs- I bet 99% of THEIR members know little to nothing concerning bmps. and game depts. can send people on jaunts- win win...for THEM
you not enough time or money argument has zero legs- be like me saying I'm going to test out motorcycle safety- but didn't have enough money so used skateboards
what did, in any practical terms, in any way where the data had any increased valve over anyone trapping mink for more than a few years?
feel good crap- nothing more

You ask 100 people with a vested interest on either side many would tell you they have heard of the BMP's. The public information gets out by the game agencies across the US about the BMP's plus some people know of how to look it up online. I have used the information in school talks as have many others. The videos they have produced and the fact sheets and data on such are very good and available to the general public as well. They have an online trapper ed course as well. Tman compairing safety test where litigation is highly likely if a product fails, far different than compairing trap testing The budget is what it is and to date if one looks there have been many BMP's done on many species with more to come! The coyotes have gotten a lot of time because of their nature and popularity across the US. I am all for a trap check off on trapping supplies of 2-3 cents on the dollar for education and further testing how about you? AFWA has taken on this testing and promoting of trapping and has done a great job, because of their resources and many groups being involved , having all that involvement either big or small by other groups is a plus I have little doubts in that. You feel this is nothing more than feel good, the facts are it has helped both the US and Canada keep the fur trade flowing and putting trapping and trappers in a better light. I would say go to AFWA and look up the resources there, far more than just BMP's for sure. it concept works with the other to promote trappers and trapping. Of course a seasoned trapper will get less from the BMP's than people without the knowledge but they are guides to help not made to be set in rules and regs . Just like the seasoned trapper would get little from a trappers ed course or a seasoned hunter getting much from hunt safe either. These are setup to show the basis and used as guidelines to help people be more successful and safe in the outdoors.
