The church needed to provide that wiggle room to avoid losing members over it.

Please read there are 450K Catholics not divorced and remarried, so I sure can tell you can't speak to the issue if you don't understand the comment or question.

Tman that was YOUR priest that did such and would be against the rules and that happens in ALL religions but the tribunal is there and used and I know for a fact people who have been denied the access to remarry in the Catholic Church. Also I have yet to be in Catholic Church that has a mandate on money you give, unlike others that clearly state what your amount should be to be closer to god. Each to his own.
I have been through the process and I found it neither uncomfortable or cute but a way to see that my marriage was sanctified in the church. So I played the Cards that where dealt to me. The paper work and time showed me that marriage is something one should not take lightly and divorce does have consequences, again each to his own if one doesn't like the process then go elsewhere simple really.
My main beef is when churches decide to play by their own sets of rules and a priest or pastor feels they are above the basic laws of said church no matter religion. I go to a like minded church. My in laws keep telling me their priest said it is ok for them to eat meat of Fridays during lent, Because they are over the age of 65, I raised the BS flag on them on that issue, as catholic law clearly states age by itself is not a factor in following Lenten beliefs and rules. My priest will tell you age by itself means nothing when looking at this issue because of canon law, fasting is a different rule than is no meat on fridays.
My resolve is not to go to church when we visit them unless we go to another church where this priest isn't doing mass.

We have dozens of Roman Catholic Parishes in our area that require a minimum amount per year which is called "pew rent". In most cases it is a modest amount but that is one way of not having members who give zip and is very different from your experiences from what I am reading.

TC- I grew up in such a RC atmosphere, I still genuflect when I smell incense.
at one time, I had 7 close relatives, that were nuns, priests or monks- made family reunions......interesting
if you are looking for someone to debate the tenets of the RC faith, including all the hypocrisy-
I'm your huckleberry as BK used to say

Bryce here is the position on such and pew rent? Never heard of anyone paying such LOL. Any church of the catholic faith that mentions a set amount well is not going by the catholic faith. Tman my great aunt was a nun, my grandmother is 93 and watches mass daily I could count on one hand the number of masses in her life she has missed in 93 years, all that aside being a good catholic is different from knowing Catholics you would agree? All religion has some hypocrisy to it When you involve certain people to bend charge they all have an idea on how best to do their service. The key is to cut through it and have a good core belief system. The principals of the religion are the main point for me and the rest is variables that take on its own depending on area, the priest and even the bishops of the areas, No different than any other religon really. You can either be apart of a faith or not free choice and free will. I am not the best catholic but I work at each day. Official position online "I was born and raised in the Mormon Church, went on a mission, and did everything a good Mormon should do, including tithing. Since my wife and I converted to the Catholic Church we still have nagging doubts that we should be tithing to our parish (as we did when we were Mormons: ten percent of our gross income), except that it's much harder to do so now that we have several children. The Mormon Church taught me that tithing is mandatory. What's the Catholic Church's position? Answer Although the Church teaches that offering some form of material support to the Church is obligatory for all Catholic adults who are able to do so, it doesn't specify what percent of one's income should be given. Remember, tithing was an Old Testament obligation that was incumbent on the Jews under the Law of Moses. Christians are dispensed from the obligation of tithing ten percent of their incomes, but not from the obligation to help the Church. The key to understanding how God wants us to give to the Church is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2, "On the first day of the week [Sunday] each of you should set aside whatever he can afford," and in 2 Corinthians 9:5-8," So I thought it necessary to encourage the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for your promised gift [donation], so that in this way it might be ready as a bountiful gift and not as an exaction. Consider this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. To paraphrase: God doesn't demand a fixed amount of money from us; he wants us to give from the heart. If people are forced by their church to give a certain percent of their income, that's extortion. If they give freely and cheerfully the amount they are able, that's a gift.

A funny but good story on the power of religion a kid in the school my wife worked in SD he was a normal teenager liked to party with his friends, chase girls and played sports pretty good to, went to black hills state college comes home 5 years ago after 1 semester and says he wants to become a catholic priest! never would have thought in a million years this kid to be a catholic priest , he got to know our younger priest some and that influence plus a calling he had I still have a hard to believing he has done such but is really something if you knew this young man.

These are wood pipes he built and a tribute to his grandparents in NW SD. This tells me that religion has a positive effect on people. Damn proud of this kid and know his mother who is a sweet lady and a good soul. Yes another reason I believe in The Lord Jesus Christ. www.youtube.com/watch?v=E43rhdU39nA&sns=em
