See, that's the way I look at the Midwest and East, you pay for it with fewer opportunities overall, and my cost of living here is pretty cheap.
Depredating lions or in self defense. No recreational harvest since Gov. Reagan signed the first moratorium into law in 1972.
They're actually a species I would bother to hunt actually.
Not since Prop. 4 was passed in 1998. Fought hard to keep them for many years.
They do work, on gray fox too, which were pretty much my target species here in the leghold/snare days. Coyotes were unwanted bycatch, essentially long legged possums screwing up my cat sets.
And I'll take my ocean fisheries, recreational and commercial, the salmon and steelhead in the rivers, planted and native trout in the backcountry, feral pigs, black bear, several sub species of deer, the waterfowl of the Pacific Flyway, doves, 3 native species of quail, grouse, chukar, band-tailed pigeons, snipe, rabbits, tree squirrels, and lots of varmints to shoot over that any day. And huge amounts of public lands and waters.
I could never find any place that had the opportunities that I do here, hence the reason I'm here.

About the only thing on your list that we dont have is the ocean.
I seen it, wasnt impressed. People like what they like and your arrogance is part of the reason this place has turned into tombstone.

Nah, you're missing a lot more than that, got some things we don't out here but overall you're missing a lot.
And having an ocean available is most beneficial.
Oddly enough I felt the same way about the Midwest. Go figure huh................
I've stated many times that I value the opportunities that I have available. And that I'm happy that you're happy with what you have.
I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that trappers want their beliefs validated, not challenged.
And when they're wrong they're loathe to admit it.
It's like with your lawsuit, you wanted universal agreement and a place to fundraise. You didn't want it questioned and had no real answers beyond the platitudes you offered.

FWS but your posting on a trapping site That is a deal breaker for many trappers. Not having the ability to use equipment is there with your NEED of the ocean and 3 native species of quail. We'd all have our endeavors and trappers we'll they need to trap and use the equipment they wish to. In many states you can do that in some you can not and I could say without a doubt and my zeal for trapping that no footholds would make move to another state simple really.

since trapping is my #1 activity- CA not really the place to go-
really be hard pressed, to not have Minnesota #1 in any category for sportsmen- add northern WI and the UP as the same
big game- bear, deer, elk and moose lotterys (most years)
small game- squirrels, jacks, snowshoes, cottontails
birds- pheasants, sharptails, ruffed, huns, turkeys, woodcock, snipe and we still are the Mississippi flyway and stills lots of ducks and geese
furbearers- coyotes, coon, martin, fisher, weasels, cats, beaver, otter, mink, rats, badger red fox, gray fox and yes even possums and skunks
plants- ginseng, goldenseal, wild rice, tons of nut bearing trees
fish- been over that
all available to any resident

arrogance?
reminds me of a joke-
a biker is standing on the corner, and a nun walks by. She tells him she is head of her order, a Mother Superior.
the biker replies- what a coincidence, I'm a bit of a superior mother myself!
arrogance doesn't bother me- what bothers me, is those having no experience with something, telling me it can't be done.
or arrogance is someone telling me what works for them, must be (how could it not be) the only way

Your last sentence pretty much sums it up. Except you could subbbstitue what tasted good for what works. Its subjective.
I wouldnt put MN, WI or the UP at the top of the list. Well maybe tied with a lot of other states.
Its the shortsightedness of many of the anti NR types that think their area is No1 and that everyone would want to come here when it could be further from the truth. I have trapped a lot of this state. Alot. But seriously, other than beaver there are other places that are better.

for sure- but we are in top 5 on so many- more so than most other states I'd think- I talking more the sheer variety we have. esp when one considers value aka coon, mink, etc in with populations.
but agree, its not the paradise for NR to come as many think- but it is a hell of a place to grow up and live in

No doubt my best times trapping have been in SD many great memories, also in college in east central Iowa and NW Iowa has some of the best coons I have ever taken. I mean extreme NW Iowa a few miles to SD to be exact. Hill country bean and corn fed types. I spent 19 years IN SD trapping, calling and hunting all over the state pretty much great people overall and pretty state with each area very different than the other for sure when one looks close. Missouri has some high coyote numbers for sure and I like that the crops are out well before trapping season makes for far less hassle as well. More fun times with my son as he gets older and cherish the times spent trapping coyotes and coons and bobcats with him. No hurry to beat the deep snows and utterly cold temps which tend to turn young kids attention to other things

Ottertail county?
I suppose, nice lake country.
If I was going to move I think it would be along the MN river somewhere between new ulm and mankato. Trappers paradise.
Otherwise it would be the NW Angle.

Yep, Ottertail... Good grief the lakes... Cant turn the pickup without hitting one...
Absolutley, love the drive up there... Looking at all the nicely manicured farms...
New Ulm, might kinda go by there on the drive up? Seems like ive seen that sign.. Mn river.. I think we cross that... Beaver lodge in the same place every year..

the only place to live in Mn is SE
its a whole different world from all the rest of the state
quite seriously, if I had to live in another part of Mn, I'd move out of state
