We had a Chessie, beautiful dogs. I read once where a guy said if he drove up to a farm and a collie came out, he'd get right out and pet him. If a lab came out, he'd be a little cautious but slowly get out and let the lab lick him. If a Chessie came out, he 'd put the truck in reverse and back out of the driveway. lol
Our Chessie was great with our own little kids, but did not like other kids very well, never did anything, but he 'd watch them with those weird eyes and made me wonder what he was thinking of doing. He had a dog pen outside and we had to put in feeder shoot so if we went away and needed someone to feed him they could do it without getting too close to him, and a hose to fill his water dish. He didn't like strange men and he would let them know it. Our neighbor and a friend didn't want to feed him, they were afraid of him. So, just be aware if you hear rumors about them being one family dogs, ours certainly was. I could take him down to the pond and he'd cruise around for an hour with just his nose and his eyes showing, just like a muskrat. He loved the water. He'd jump out of the boat and bring crippled ducks back and several times the beav had to come home because he had his limit and never shot the gun.
Cheers, Pam

Pam: this is chessie #6 for me. I've got three right now.
Great dogs for the way I live and what I do. I never worried about a stranger with the kids or a bear in the yard.
I had one that made more than a few guys jump on the hood of their cars.
