I'm shopping for a new pup.
One suitable litter I located has a few line breeds in it. At least 2 in the past 5 generations.
In other words, the father of the bitch is the grandfather of the male as well as a great-great grandfather of the female.
I am not a fan of line breeds in the first place. I've had my wallet and heart broken already and it isn't something I want to relive.
I know that line breeds are o.k. (within reason) and that is how specific breeds started. But I also know that there are enough individual dogs in every worthwhile breed that incest isn't really necessary!
I also know that genetic traits, both positive and negative, are enhanced through line breeding.
This will be the second litter this bitch has. It is also the same male in both litters. However, the first litter was 12 months ago .... so that doesn't give enough time to tell me much.
My question: How close is too close when we're talking line breeds?
Thanks.

If you like those lines go for it. Not too close by any means. Are they two different lines. Also don't confuse line breeding with in breeding.

Musher I had a line of patterdales that was son -mother the I would breed out the next litter. They are insanely hard dogs.I had those dogs for years never had any problems. A lot of the pats. had the same male a lot of times and a lot of the females he was breed to.

Spartacus is in my males line. I named a one of my females Runtacus lol, she is a fiesty little thing. Ive been told with Patts you get the best dogs by breeding close, may not be the same w/ other breeds.

I think that might be the case with all terrier's.That Spartacus was a badger dog in the old days.By the size of the English badger's he must of been a bad dude.
