Lb I contend the 243 can be a very good fur caliber and anchor coyotes with authority as well.
With the bullets I use the bal tip not partition fur damage is minimal, as minimal as a total cavity blow up of a 22 cal? Close but not the same I agree, but anchoring with gusto it will do and it will also preserve a high majority of fur damage to the minimal side, have seen it many times on spring, summer fall and winter coyotes.
I have had 2 out of a decent pile I would consider total fur loss, both belly hits at further ranges, a zipper effect for sure but neither made it past 89 yrds and lay dead. Still had the energy to do what was needed and the best part- zero shoulder splash no matter range or velocity I have been using the tad thicker jacketed bullets. Nolser has a few offerings the thin skinned varmints, the tad thick bal tips, the partitions and the accu bonds. Through my use and testing in a 243 the bal tips are as perfect a bullet as I have found for laying down dead coyotes and keeping fur damage to a minimum. I didn't set out to lessen fur damage it was a side benefit from using some h-4350 powder and working up a very accurate load right below 2,900 FPS.

Hey, I have no issues whatsoever with a 243. I have only used the 70 grain Ballistic Tip and that bullet works great bang/flop. The Ballistic Tip I use in 25 caliber is the 100 grain and it sounds like performance might be as you describe? Kills with authority with a pass through, not a lot of damage, (not guaranteed), but surprisingly little damage on a lung shot.

Yes, the .243 isn't a good load for fur.... But coyotes usually aren't worth skinning down here anyway. I have shot several nice hogs and a fat axis deer while calling for coyotes in the edge of the hill country to the west of here. They seem to be curious about the various sounds. The cheap old 100 grain bullet will knock em down.

But with the right load rino it can be a very good fur load for Coyotes that is.
LB I started out trying the 70's and 80's as well but due to jacket construction and speeds found them to be like most other varmint bullets and decided to try a higher grain with the hunting jacket. The 80 grain where very accurate but still did the shoulder splash thing, so they got axed and found a compairable load accuracy wise with the 95's in my gun.
Each to his own really but a good discussion for sure.

Think what you want. But like everywhere else more callers and fewer coyotes.

I have been hunting all over that area for years, usually with my buddy Vic. That's why I think it's pretty good.

Yes I know Vic and have known when you were down. Vic seems to think the same way. Not saying it horriable but its not the paradise it once was. We have had a prey base crash for the last few years and it has hurt our local population. Its starting to recover but it maybe a few more years. With all the BP thats been hired on in the last few years there is also considerable more people in the field. It is what it is.

That's true, but it's all over, so that area is still "not bad", compared to some others. LB

I just go by the numbers I kill from year to year. Over the last couple of years they have went to half of what I was killing for several years in a row prior. I don't hunt anywhere but in my local area and consider my local area about 50 mile radius. LB you going to the AZ Trappers convention? If so I will see you there.

On my return from Texas, in February, I made a detour in your 50 mile area for 20 minutes, one stand, one dead coyote and back on the road.

Yes that gives a great example of the overall local population. Number of adults to pups killed and overall size and health. Well if thats all you go by from the numbers I see Gary Clevenger kills with a shotgun in CA it must be loaded as well. So are you going to the AZ trapping convention?

I don't know if I will be there. Maybe? When is it, August?
Gary has an inferiority complex. I promise you, when I was Hunt Chairman for over ten years, he always attended the hunts, usually with his regular partner, Don Jamroz. I can't remember a single time that those guys turned in an animal? Don placed on a State hunt once, but it was with Steinberger, a seasoned veteran. All Gary's success, such as it is, has been (I believe) hunting alone, (non contest) but since I don't keep track of him any more, I could be wrong? He's a total prick, BTW.

Gary approached a friend of mine, several time State Champion and asked if he would coach him and show him everything he knew about hunting coyotes and offered to pay him $10,000. He got turned down.

22-6MM "Coyotes drop as if hit by the Hammer of Thor. The tracks they're standing in when you touch it off are the same ones they die in." Shot this wet female yesterday morning. Died so quick she never even dropped the young pheasant in her mouth. Point of impact was the center of the shoulder Attachments:
