Lets see that work of art...Rob........or Tmann. Where most people don't see the mouse dammage or other shrew bits or weasel bite. I have spent many a time over the grading table watching, listening and learning. From a distance some skins look ok but go into the damaged pile...........mmmmmmmmmmmm.. looking carefully you see little tiny holes in the soft clear skin, sure enough there are bite marks. once tanned those need repair and the skin is no more perfect. So from 16$ down to $ 2.00 in one bite. I wish some one would post the pic of those Alberta system. designer;Mitchell where are you.

All 3 species of weasels in North America change into a winter coat. It depends on season advancement/latitude to which ones change to white. Mustela ermine or Shorttail weasel is the most commonly found. It streaches to 12 inches on the fur strechers. Least weasels Mustela rixosa are small, thumb size and not much black on their tails, stretch 6 to8 is long. Longtailed weasels, m.frenata or prarie weasels are the largest. Females are the size of male ermine, males 2 inches longer. Young of the year are always one inch skin size smaller.

Thanks for all the advice. I made up boxs designed liked those in pixs. I screwed a large rat trap to the bottom and nade hinged door on top. I made the boxs of aged ruff-cut lumber 1/2" thick with 1 3/4" entrance hole. The area I have to trap as stated before is old clear cut forest with large piles of thrash limbs, end cuts, etc. I have some of Stefs XLDC which is a very skunky lure. Do you think this would work as lure?

I have never had any chewed at by mice, but I have had them eaten by other weasels that came to the box after a catch.

Do you think this would work as lure? Unscrew that trap and just let it lay right under the hole. If you have it screwed down and you get a weasel that is frozen in you will damange the weasel trying to get it out. Me i have never screwed a trap down if your worried about it not staying right under the hole make a couple trap cleats to put behind the trap.

906, never occured to me that a frozen weasel would be difficult to get out of a screwed down trap. I will take your advice a unscrew them. I did install larger wire pans to give more kill area. I was out today picking black berries and scouting the area, the areas looks good. Am looking forward to giving all this good advice a try.

Zip locks with 1/4 inch holes either side andthrough the box. then just cut the zip locks. A fired off trap that has nothing to take the impact usually cracks with the snapping, unless secure, ie zip locks, or laminated with 1/8 " plywood on the underside. If a trap is set off, and no weasel, always look around the zone 10-15 yards they seem to escape and die shortly afterwards. In Canada the only legal way to take weasels is with Victor wooden rat traps. They need no modifications because they strike and kill within the 300 seconds. If you ever have one go off on your cold fingers, you sometimes think you number has been called. Hey it does not get cold enough to freeze down there, does it!!!!!!!!!!1
