I like them in the ponds and small lakes (no to low current)...they always clog too much in my ditches, streams, rivers, in the swamps the rat's pack the openings with debris..but I'm sure that's due to MI's size restriction. They are all I use on one golf course, to keep everything out of sight and those are just bank den rats.
I'm going to have to try a half hinge door!
I've never had a floater either, most are clamped on the wire.

Do the submarine type trap really need a door? I'm not sure I see much difference in the results.

My experiences mirror yours on the funnel type for me, door or no door its about the same.

So what your saying the rats can't find their way out. And If this Is true you wouldn't have rats hanging up On the doors. They would be trapped above and below and to the sides of the funnel.

I use funnel traps (submarine) about a foot in diameter and 32 or 36 inches long. They easily hold 6 to 9 rats without having the issue with the doors getting jammed. The funnel has a 4 inch hole. NAFA has patterns for them.
I also have used 6 inch square colony traps , 24 inches long. Rats seem to jam the door bad on them . Don't think I ever have caught over 2 rats at a time in one.
Once I had a big sucker in a funnel trap. I left him there to see what would happen. Next check had a nice mink. The sucker was chewed up some but still swimming!

Gary on the submarine type I dont put doors on mine anymore.
I have two different sizes I use. I make one thats a foot in dia. that I use in smaller culverts and one thats 30 inches in dia. that I like in the big culverts. Most I ever had in one was 7 that I let soak for 48 hours.
The square ones with the doors like Ww I havent caught more than 2 yet. It seems for me that each one will to to the top of each door and plug it.
Also gary on the larger submarine I dont think I have had much of a problem with them plugging up the doors on the few traps I have rigged that way. On a 30 inch trap it seems they get pinned up between teh funnel and the wire cage or the float to the top.

So Steven how big is small end of the forcing cone?
These traps have got me very Interested. I can see where they would be very effective In certain situations.

It's kind of strange, but I notice rats seem to get waterlogged quicker in the funnel trap compared to other types of traps.

So you just set the funnel traps is culverts and the rats find them?Do you paint the funnel black?

The funnels have to be painted FLAT Black inside and out. The hole diameter should be smaller than your fist..... a longer sleeve funnel also works better. they get up and just swim like crasy on the top and muskrats do not drown. they go into a turpour and settle down and recucculate their blood. Then they get up and swim .Ones you take out of the trap should get a headbonking befor packing away. I believe the mink wire is 4feet long that the length I use. One piece of steel is wired inside and I have found lost ones that way with a speaker magnet through the ice, when the cable has been cut or someone tried to steal the trap and break the cable.

Are these funnels made from rolled hardware cloth or are they formed from sheet metal?

Gary I dont really know the exact dia. of the inside hole off the top of my head.
I'd have to drive out to the farm to measure one.
My big ones are made off a pattern that NAFA puts out. Smaller ones I made are just a modified version of the bigger one.
Coonboy yes I just throw them in the culvert, I also paint them black, if you send nafa an email or call their stoughton office I'm sure they'd mail you a pattern.

Sheet metal funnels. I found some galvanized duct work that is a good weight of steel to work with.

Some of you may be familiar with the sheet metal trade. They had some adapters that slide Into square duct that would allow you to then go to round pipe. I think they were called square to rounds. I would think something like that would give you a great foundation to build your traps on. I think some of them had the round opening centered In the square and some had them formed so that the round came out flush with the bottom. Any thoughts from you colony trap users.

what exact situations are you using these traps in?
Small creeks are out simply because of the population dynamics, and I'd think big rivers would also be out- so that leaves marshes.
unfortuneatly, I don't trap marshes anymore.

I guess you could fence off the small feeder creeks and place trap In each one and then just pick up the bounty. I can think of about a 100 wet culverts leading from one water source to another where I could make some impressive catches If these things work
