What I like with a float like mine is that the trap is sitting under half inch of water all the time.
Current is cut by the V shape and rat just swim forward in front of the opening of the V. Rat sees the bait, smell the rat musk goes direct in between the V without climbing on it and bang, he's caught.
Floats are great, they catch lot of rats but many can swim close and won't get on it.
A mix and match of everything is in order when trapping different creeks, rivers, marsh etc...

makete- when the Mississippi really floods big time- the only dry gground the rats have, is the dike roads crossing the river- makes them easy prey to raptors and cars-
