651 coons 52 Mink 13 Muskrat I am having Greony come tomorrow 1/13/2011 to look at it. This fur was All caught within first 6 days of Iowa trapping season, with right at half coming in the first two nights. So this is as early caught as it comes. I have skinned and got every coon that step in my trap put up, so no junk is throwin out. What would you HAVE to HAVE (MINIMUM) from groney tomorrow if they were your coon to not ship them?... Remember all first week and ALL junk coon in!

With that large a bunch you may get that.I'm guessing he will go through them and come up with closer to 16.You do have some leverage so I bet he will come up some for you.You may do better shipping but you are probably going to have some no sales.I don't know what price I would sell.Wish I had that problem.Just for the simple reason you went to the work of putting them up I guess I would ship.I feel the auction pays you more for your put up than Groeny.

That is a nice haul of fur, I take it you were running with a partner based on an assumption of who you are. I would be sure to ck the market around you and and what sold on the recent auctions as well. It is also hard to know where you are from not only from no location posted, but I assume IA but what part? southern Ia coon are not NW or NE Ia coon. That is my point. I would be more inclined to push for 18-19 dollar average at least. They look like fair coon, as well as mink a $14 or $15 average. Remember you have the upper hand for a FAIR deal to you and buyer, but you need to do your homework, the buyer FOR THE MOST PART will have no labor in them for processing. Nice Haul

BTW I would surely take the time to grade out yourself and compare #'s after groeny looks, it teaches you what to look for as well as you know what you have. Is Mike M. coming to look at them or groeny truck?

18 on the coon, 16 on the mink and 8 on the rats and hold him to the fire, The catch is way down all around the country so fur WILL be in short supply. I usually have at least a month of water trapping til the freeze. This year 4 days. There will be little heavy and semi heavy fur this year. Don't give it away. Nice catch.

Here is what Greony offered me today:
24@35 110@27 96@17 216@9 125@5 43@2 31@0 (These he did not even look at so they were not part of his quote, These were really junk and i had them aside to show him at the end)
So...he offered me $8097 for 614 coon for an AVG. of $13.19 Adding in the 31 i assumed to be 0 the avg. would have been $12.55.
This was not close to what i was wanting and told him so... he made some calls back to the shop and said he could do $11 of the 216 coon so coming to a new total of $8529 or Avg of $13.89 adding in the 31 no value the avg would be $13.22
I ended up not selling and took them all to the NAFA drop off for the Feb. Auction. This is my first time ever shipping and looking forward to see the outcome.
Yes, I though i had 651 coon in the pile last night but after counting twice today it is 645!

Thanks for sharing your success and hard work. Your photos motivate an "elderly" guy and I appreciate that.
Education is never free you just want to make it as low cost as you can. I feel you made the correct choice. With a sale only a month away and the check only 2 weeks away after that the time value of money at 1-2 % is not a great loss. You have 340 coons in his 5-9 piles put up. Many of these are lower grade 2 and 3x coons and should bring more, those are what are average coons for many. We had lots of eastern WI early hunted coons sell at our small sale Sunday for about $10-50-$12.00 in the grease so I feel you will do better as our early coon are harvested the last two weeks of October and yours are early November and that is two weeks of less sun. If you break even you lost a few cents a coon and the value may be worth it. With that many coons you can sort through how many 2xl, 3xl coons you have at NAFA and that will tell you how many of those were in that 7-8 group.
Good luck with shipping your fur.

Great catch there! I don't think we have that many coon in the whole state of Montana. What about your mink and 'rats what did you get offered on them? Keep us posted as to how you did at NAFA.

So some rough calculations that many coon in the round would be 10,000 pounds @ 15 pounds each. Was it 2 or 3- 21 cu ft freezers full of skinned hides?
Glad to see that you had some fluid replacement in the blue container in one of the pics, after all that hard work.

Went through plenty blue containers!

IN fact I may have told groeny that bid was very offensive but don't know what your fur looks like up close, nor should you burn bridges

Good luck,I too think you made the right choice. It will be fun for you having them at the auction anyhow. From checking out grading sheets to watching the auction on line.It makes it a little more fun.I would think you should at the least end up with about the same profit. With upside possible. But no one has a Chrystal ball even Groeny or NAFA for that matter.
