Has anyone ever observed a groundhog digging a den? In all my years of trapping, hunting, and just being in the outdoors,I never have. But just the same they do appear and I wondered if they might do the digging at night.

Just had a young of the year dig one in a clients raised flower planter in the middle of the day. In the 3 hours it really made a mess with a yard of soft soil moved. Relocation was easy after the flowing garden hose went down the burrow, wish they were all that easy. But must say that our western variety are a lot different from your eastern chucks. Our prefered denning sites are rock outcroppings/ field rock removals/ edge of field forested areas. repetatively used denning sites. Interesting is all our fisher have the woodchuck species of flea on them, so fisher are co-exsisting in the same denning bedding areas as woodchucks are living in.
