I don't know about dumplings but I know some people that eat those things. They are all from Alaska If that means anything.  |

So Gary when you are visiting the daughter and grandkids , how does the daughter fix those squirrels for you? Crispy?......Crockpot?

Never have been served any or saw the kids cook and eat any. But They have a friend that they save all the squirrels they kill and him and Is wife eat them. Just toss them in the freezer and when he shows up he collects them. So far things haven't got that tough.  You ever partake? |

Isnt that sorta like not eating deer meat til things get real bad and you have to choke it down? Squirrel is a great meal. Better than most things that come out of the store. Squirrel and dumplings are the best, but also like them fried. |

Grey and fox squirrels I agree with but are those little pine squirrels eatable?

It's OK till your eye sight gets poor and you can't see those little bones, then crunch.
Don't worry Ron sometimes these guys get off topic once and a while, but with current fur price we have to make ends meet.
On fur averages I actually can make a lot on red squirrels conside Tax receipts that I make off them. 5 species of fleas sometimes @ 15$ species, hide to NAFA @ 0.88 dollars = $ 75.88 per squirrel tax receipt write off. It is like what Bob W say " alternative markets" make you the money.

I wish we could snare them. We ate a lot of squirrels when I was a kid in Wisconsin, but no one out here that I've met will eat them. We've eaten some of these little mountain pine squirrels. They taste good enough, but it takes a few of them for a meal for a family. Not much meat...

I think that our eastern reds are smaller than the westerns. I'm happy if I average a buck a piece. After a few tries we finally got the law changed so that we could snare squirrels, but the dumbutts didn't exclude squirrels from the law that prevents snared animals from being suspended.
And they are not keen about doing it.
I've eaten reds. there isn't much point in it. They are too small and too boney with no meat for the effort. I think a meal of hare front legs would be better!

Musher now you have an article to take to them, to get the law changed, get the so called fur biologist informed. Forestry will support you because red squirrels are a majour problem with new 20 year old scot pine plantations, and it is here there is the most newly middens started. It is the squirrels prunning of the cones in august that creates the problem.
If the squirrels are not caught just right, neck capture them the snare marks and the averages drop fast.
I saw some old photo's of Dominion Sudak's squirrel sorting room, there was 300,000 specimens for one auction piled up, evreywhere. There was apple crates being open that were FULL from one trapper's catch. That was back when gas was 25 cents a gallon and a squirrel got 50 cents. Now there are only a few boxes full from individual trappers, and those are shoe boxes.

The sugar bush operators hate them with a passion. But getting laws changed here is like pushing rocks uphill using a wet pasta noodle. It seems that most of the people involved know little or nothing. Those that do have some knowledge are very narrowly learned.
Now if a Quebec guy '"nvented" a squirrel snare the law would get changed really quick ....

Well just take that pic of Ron's Alberta tie from Mitchell and do a photo flip,...... and call it a PQ knot. That plastic line and the taps are sure magnets for them to bite into during sapping time. Maybe Ron can have some one translate it to French so you can post it on the Quebec forums. Good job for Frenchman to do a tri-lingual translation of this post of Ron's.

I did use an online French Translator to translate it on the Canadian site. However the french was so bad (evidently) that I removed it.  |
