Here's the first catch of the year. I don't really know if it's the first thing caught BUT it's the first trap I checked that had fur! Saw grouse. This got my blood churning. Wolf kick back! There's two sets and three snares waiting for the next time they stroll through. Scenery shot. The snow as melted on this section. Behind me it wasn't!

I agree with Steve. No biggie, if I see grouse they go home for dinner! Love the "trapper's" shotgun too. That gun looks like it's taken it's fair share of game.

Steve: The ruffed grouse here are like chickens. In French we call them "poule" which means chickens! You see them, you get the gun, you walk up to it until it stretches out its neck, and you label it.
And yes, that gun has lots of grouse. I bought it over 25 years ago second hand from a fellow. I bought a 12 guage pump and the .410 in a hard gun case for $100. It has taken a pounding and works like a charm. I might even clean it this year! The 12 saw good wear, too.
The kick back is of one wolf.
Thanks for the comments. I shot a couple of videos today. I have some skinning to do so getting them on might not happen. The best video is one I didn't take. I was on a bike and the camera was in the truck. It was a red on a slider. It worked like a charm (as it always does!) The fox was over the bank and under a brush pile.

Seen 4 grouses the last couple days in my wood (backyard) ...took the 410 couple times and couldn't have a shot.
In the wood around cities... they are very shy. They're not enough frozen yet...LoL

I was following fresh wolf tracks, in the dark, to the kick back spot this morning. The wolf came back. It approached both sets, stopped about 3 feet away and that was that. It did not go in the trails leading to the blind set snares.
I also nearly hit a calf moose a half hour later. It was still dark and it burst out in front of me. It then stopped 20 feet away as I braked and veered. Thankfully it was on a dirt road and I wasn't going too fast. As I groped for the camera, and a dog barked in my ear, mama moose came out. She was not too pleased. She was so close the truck lights were shining leg only. I figured my Ranger was going to get a stomp. She glared, posed a little and led the calf away.
I'm peeved about the wolf shying away. Waxed dirt? Dirty trap? Who knows. The frozen urine and the lured other set didn't do it. The wolf knew something was amiss.
I've had them swing by, ignore a set, and then catch them later. But I don't recall a wolf coming back to work a set after it backs away like that.
I'll guess that I'll sour grape it. With the crappy fur prices and all that, that wolf did me a favour by not getting caught. The fur was probably tawny, matted, and the hide unprime.
I set three more blind snares!
