I'm looking into places to purchase bulk chain and have (I hope) a good source. One of the oldest chain companys around is located just down the road in my hometown.
Questions: #3 st link chain seems to "not" be an industry standard. 2/0 and 4/0 are the norm.
I cannot think of a reason in the world that #2 welded machine chain wouldn't be more than adequete?
Am I right or wrong?
Most chains are zinc coated over the steel- and I am trying to see if I can purchase it in bulk w/o the zinc coating.
Any comments on this?
Should I pursue this more?

Steve Good quality #2 chain will handle any coyote I believe. I do carry #3 for those who want it. Both #2 and #3 are American made but pricey.
Uncoated chain is tough to find these days but it's out there somewhere. I don't buy in bulk, I buy by the 100 ft. box. That would change if the price and quality were right. Terry

with shipping to numerous areas, it would have to be a HECK of a deal (I'd think) to make it worthwhile.
not trying to throw cold water, I'm IN if it'll work financially!
anyone willing to split up a 55 gallon drum of glycol? (same problem, I'd bet)

T-man, Don't worry about the zinc coating. Muratic acid takes it off right before your eyes. It is amazing how that stuff works.

steve,
the shipping might be a moot point if you're willing to bring it to the state conventions. I, for one, would be willing to wait for delivery that way. even if I didn't make the convention (TRY to keep me away!), I'd still know enough guys going there to make the pick up for me.

Shipping would be the killer- but I could pick it up and bring it to the conventions so the shipping would be $0.
Of course, the people that I need to talk to aren't in to day- so it will be early in the week before I find anything out.
I'm thinking if the minumum order is 1000-2000 feet- we can handle that- heck- I'm going to need 100' myself.
so the zinc coating isn't a problem? I'll pursue both- you never know- w/o zinc might be a lot less $$$....or in this crazy world a lot more LOL (like Un leaded gas!)
FYI- For those of youwho don't know- an interesting fact is that years ago- all gas was unleaded. Lead and other ingreidients are added to gas to make it burn more efficiently. but now- to not add an additive...it costs more.... ---------------------------------------------------------
"$6 for a $5 axe- Yes sir, you got a deal'..." i'll get back to you.

Steve, I know other dealers have sold it at the conventions. Don't know if they would want to tell you their source though. You might try them to see.

Steve, Just remembered that I have seen it at Fleet Farm in Rochester at the back of the store. Don't know if it is the size you are looking for. You could maybe look at the spool and get a manufacturer name and look them up on the internet to see if they would sell to you.

FYI...............white viniger will take off the zinc over night..........for those who dont want to screw w/ muritic acid. The #2 chain...........it works well on the twisten , crunchin and tanglement of an otter.........cant believe a coyote would test it more ?

How about a little background here? What is a "going price" for 2/0 chain and what is a "good deal" price roughly?

T-Man, while you are checking, would you mind asking if they have twisted link chain? I do not care about the zink, as it is easily removed.

Well, since I live next door to a hardware store, I ran over to check. They go by diameter, and 3/16" chain, rated at #750 is .79 a foot. It comes in 250 ft pails so I'm certain it would be lower bought by a unit. Also note that I'm in a rural area and the prices here tend to run high. I believe the 3/16 is what I put on my 330's. 1/4" is rated at #1250 but the price jumps to $1.19 a foot. It would seem to me that 3/16 at about 45-50 cents a foot would be a decent deal. The advantage of ordering it thru a store is that GENERALLY there is no shipping 'cuz it comes on the weekly delivery(ACE Truck)

I think what you guys are calling 2/0 chain is the same a s the chain that comes on 1 1/2 and up size traps.... #2 machine chain comes in different qualities too.... American made chain seems to have better welds and is more consistently made....foreign made chain seems tough enough but the looks arent that of u.s. made... I would skip the plating option as the plating process slightly weakens metal....(how much?? i dont know....i wouldn't mind using it if the price was ok or comparable to the regular chain).... #3 chain seems overkill in most applications...

Guys,
Just how much of that #2 self-colored (non- plated) machine chain are you all interested in?
As a trap manufacturer, I purchase that chain bulk by the 10's of thousands of feet. I have all my chain cut to length, bulk chain by the roll should be real reasonable.
Pricewise?? I would have to contact my supplier for a quote, etc.

See what you can find out Gary- and I'll do the same up here. My source is Peerless Chain Company in Winona.
At one time- they manufactored the top of the line musktat stretcher. Most of mine are still Peerless.

Steve Peerless makes good chain. That would be my first choice. Terry
