I envy you folks who can legally hunt in your state with an AR or any other semi auto rifle. I wish PA would allow it for predator hunting at least. As for the which semi auto...NO CONTEST! AR-15 all the way...The Mini's are not reliable, accurate guns out of the box. The only ones I ever thought shot well, were the custom/tricked out one's that people built. It really is like comparing a caddy to a VW beetle, IMO. Of course our going to pay more, but you get a much more reliable and accurate rifle from the box. AR's also hold their value better. I own a Bushmaster A2 in 223. It's got a stainless heavy target barrel, and was a competition gun. I love it, and wish I could hunt yotes with it in PA.

Leonard, I have no idea what happened to your post. I never saw it. I know for a fact that I didnt delete it. I dont delete nothing! I wish you would come back. Maybe Gappa dumped it. I dont know. I doubt it though. Usually you are told why first. Maybe just a computer glitch? I have been gone and away from a computer for over a month now. Please dont leave. Steve

Hello, It has been awhile since I have had my computer going from a crash and can't remember how to post the pictures on a thread, I have photbucket and know how to do that part of it but can't remember what to do to get the pictures in the thread post.
I have some things to share from experience in this thread and need to post a few pictures, I have searched over the website and can't find the needed info. I know it's on here but don't know where.
Thanks Purity

Well lets see if the pictures work, To say that a ar-15 is no good, or not as good as bolt action custom made guns is kinda misleading. Yes, custom bolt action rifles will perform very well. But that dosen"t put AR's in the junk pile. They are making some pretty accurate ar's nowdays. I have shot ar-15's since 1980 and have killed many coyotes with them. I now own a bushmaster Varminteer AR that is built for accuracy. It has a 20" fluted bull barrell free floating system on it. The barrell is not chrome lined like regular ar's. It is milled to tighter tolerences for more accuracy. It has a two stage adjustible target trigger in it and can shoot a dime sized group at 100 yards when sighting in. I have a burris scope on it and It is a hunting machine. I know when I hold the crosshairs on the target (coyote or bobcat) squeeze the trigger, It's dead out to 300 yards. after that. my accuracy drops off not from the gun but from "my" ability to judge distance and hold accordingly. That's not the guns fault. But I usually kill within the 100 yard range anyway calling. Those that say the clip, pistol grip are in the way are just used to shooting regular rifles. I personnally like the clip sticking out the bottom of the gun. I use a 30 round clip when hunting (calling) and even though I only put about 5 to 10 rounds in it. I use the clip as a rest when others use a bipod or monopod. I use the clip to rest on my knee and get a very solid rest for shooting. I don't have to bother with clumbsy bipods, (which I've tried) or leaving shooting sticks or monopods in the field from forgetfullness. The clip stays in the gun, rest's on my knee and is always there. Heres how I use the clip as a rest. In my opinion, The AR-15 has a place in predator hunting. Here are a few pictures of success. This first picture is the results of night hunting on a full-moon night with full snow coverage on ground. No artificial light. Just moonlight. The two coyotes on the right were killed with my AR-15 one at 85 steps, the other at 120 steps, The bobcat in the middle my son shot with my ar-15 at around 50 steps. The two coyotes on the left were killed with shotguns. All night hunting without artificial light. These next pictures are just typical hunting pictures. One bobcat, one coyote Ar's are very good hunting weapons in my opinion, As far as mini-14's, I have never owned one but hunted with people that did and never did see the accuracy that the ar-15's produce. Hope this helps. (smile) Purity

Nice pictures for sure. Looks like you can do some killing with that short gun. That is what they were developed for after all, isn't it?

Nice pic's Purity! You are correct too..today's AR 15's are built to much tighter tolerances. At 100-200 yards, they will shoot with the best of the factory bolt rifles. Just like a factory bolt gun, once you begin to add aftermarket performance parts, you get quite a reliable and accurate hunting weapon at long distance. I own a Bushmaster myself, but unfortunately Pennsylvania still does not allow varmint hunting with a semi auto, center or rim fire gun.

I was on the range today and was fine tuning an sks , and with a $70.00 scope and receiver top i got from cheaper than dirt, i got that gun to shoot extremely well . I mean it is a tack driver and handy little carbine. less than 200 in the whole deal and it kicks my Minni's but ,, go figure.

Okay Steve, edit:(Gappa) it's no big deal.
Still, no explanation except this charge of "caustic" which I now find personally offensive so could we delete Edge's post, please? I'm not "getting over it". You folks can do without me (but not as well) and I can do without sarcastic personal remarks. My comment was about the supposed (& imagined) accuracy of AR's in general, and not of a personal nature. What, is somebody's unilateral concept of "caustic" a crime around here? Is another man's opinion about accuracy invalid if it happens to offend delicate sensibilities? What is this, the U.N.? I offer non sugarcoated opinion. I do not accept the charge of being caustic or sarcastic. I call a spade a spade, as I see it, and have been enough lurking on the 'net for ten or twelve years. so far. I take my role seriously, and apparently, thanklessly by some? On the other hand, some (very few) people like to know what we old geezers think.
Thanks for the support, Steve Craig. I consider you to be an honorable man.

Let me amend my previous post-For all out accuracy, a single action bolt gun is inherently more accurate than a semiauto. The thing is, we are comparing 2 semiautos. My OPINION is that Ive got an accurate gun. I dont suppose or imagine it...I hit what Im shooting at. Ive shot a few 14's, and they never shot nearly as good as my AR. Thats my opinion-nothing else.

I've been known to be a little caustic also- general remarks shouldn't be construed as personal.
time to move on...

I am mulling the bushmaster ar15 for coyote and bobcat predator hunting. Can anybody give thier thoughts on the predator model vs the varmit? I see purity shoots the varmit model. Why did you choose that over the predator.
I'm new to the ar15 type gun.
