well i have been kicking around the idea of getting an AR-15 for a calling gun. so while at gander mountain today i was looking them over they had a real nice bushmaster predator model for 1299.00 but right beside that gun was a mini 14 in .223 for 729. a tad over half price of the AR. what i want to know is how well the mini 14 compairs to the AR?

The few Ruger Mini 14s that I have ever shot did not group well.

It doesnt.I own and shoot Rugers and have for years, but the mini 14 is at best a spray and pray.Ruger now sells an accurized version which I have not tried, but of the two rifles I would opt for the AR.
That being said,if semi auto isnt required,Savage and CZ rifles are a fraction of the AR price wise and extremely accurate out of the box.

I absolutely hate the looks of an AR type of rifle. They shoot well I know, but the dang things are ugly to my eyes. The regular mini-14's look nice, but don't group worth a hoot. I like the looks of the new "target" version of the mini-14, the one with the black synthetic stock. That "thumb hole" model don't look like a hunting tool to me at all. For now, I will wait and see some reports on how well these new "target" mini's shoot.

The Mini 14 is a clunky pos. I don't see how anyone that has actually used one for predator hunting would recommend it? I agree with Mr Cronk, the AR black guns offend my sensibilities, but they are far superior to the Ruger in every way....functionally, at least. The magazine and pistol grip and several other "features" don't appeal to me, at all. A semiauto Remington (760)?might be a better choice, since many states restrict the capacity to five rounds anyway? And, they actually LOOK like a sporting arm rather than an ASSAULT WEAPON.
Good hunting. LB

Chub, I just found my dream caliber in the 221 Fireball. I have used it now for 2 seasons. It doesnt exit on greys at 15 and over yards, it doesnt exit cats either at 15 to 275 yards, It has killed every coyote I and clients hit with it to 200 yards, and no fur damage either. So far, it is ideal for MY stile of hunting, in MY type habitat. If i need more gun for coyotes, in open areas, then i use the 250.
Sorry to hi-jack the thread with the 221.
I do not like the AR looks either. But that is me and if others do like it, that is fine too!

The AR beats the pants off the mini-14. That said, the Cabelas price on the AR is outrageous. Go to your local gun store and you can get one tricked out as a slick calling rifle for that price.

Do you remember the Heckler & Koch 630, their semi auto .223 sporter ? Damn those were nice rifles, accurate too. Balanced well, easy to shoot. Can't get em' new anymore and used they're like $1800 and up.

I shot a HK 630 for a year. Got rid of it. In my opinion, the trigger was poor, accuracy was not up to my standards, and the stock had so much drop at the heel I had to lift my face up to see through the scope. And the scope mounts were really over priced for what you got.
The AR's have two advantages.
1 You have multiple follow up shots when 9 or 10 coyotes come charging into your stand
2 When you are unsure of the range, you can walk your bullets into the target.
LOL
I don't like them either.

I've hunted with AR's and RShaws. Both were ugly, one's easier to carry than the other.

I've shot 2 different minis both sucked couldn't group much better than a shotgun. Never shot a AR. I like bolt guns myself and usually can get a follow up shot pretty quick if needed which usually is. You can pick up a Tikka (T3 I beleive it is) right now for a good price. Father in law just got one in a 223 it shoots great with factor ammo. Haven't tried reloads yet. The savage with the accu trigger is a great gun as well.

The thing I don't think I would like about an AR is the same thing I don't like about my CZs'.. The stupid clip. Stand after stand pulling the unspent cartridge from the receiver and then pulling the clip and loading the shell back into the clip and then closing the bolt and putting the clip back in. Doing it once ain't bad but fifteen times or more an outing starts to add up. Bolt guns are hard to beat. As far as the AR\14 thing my 14 was a decent coyote gun (averaged 1.5 inches at 100 for three rds and was a lot of fun.

When they were first in the system the Mini 14 looked like a cross between an M14 and an M1 Carbine. Both good guns. How they managed to keep only the bad parts I'll never understand.
