you need to focus your question a little better, mikeyc. You will find no consensus on this issue. Everybody has a bag full of calls they don't use and a couple they do use. Totally a personal preference. Like asking what breakfast cereal we all like? Who cares?
The real question is open or closed reed, and even then it's not for guidance, it's just to satisfy a curiosity. What I like has nothing to do with what you will like. For instance, I actually prefer diaphrams. Probably puts me in the bottom 5% and helps you not at all? LB

mikeyc, An enclosed reed type howler would be next to worthless. For a mass produced howler that will get the job done, take a look at the Crit'r call Magnum.

There is a closed reed Lohman howler that replicates a decent howl... not sure if they make it anymore but such a critter does exists! One of my calling partners has one and it works fairly well... considering.

My partner is all but worthless... but the howler is surprisingly useful at times. Of course it doesn't offer any variety or pitch change- so you're pretty well stuck with the same ole' howl everytime. It works well for him.
I just noticed the discussion about the Primos (Randy Anderson) line above. The Hot Dog Howler is pretty hard to use in my opinion... not a big fan... but the the Lil' Dog Howler is a good call. The HotDog is just a ripoff of Dan Thomspons Red Desert and a poor one at that- wouldn't reccomend spending $29 for that thing. Dan's howlers are my favorite in the collection... but I haven't sprung for a Cronk yet either! ;D
