**When it comes to the .22mag...SOOOO many people do NOT HAVE CLUE ONE...they think...wow!! it blows up squirrels...I killed a coyote with it...it ROCKS!!! It's called a "LACK OF KNOWLEDGE"...lack of knowledge of balistics...velocities..AND last but NOT least..required FOOT/lbs of energy required to knock down/cleanly kill what they're shooting at!!! FACT...FACT....FACT..(NEXT one that posts how AWSOME it is.."I kill coyotes/deer etc at 200yds...I'll POST the info to PROVE them a fool..) lynx **
I have personally taken over 100 coyotes with the 22 WMR.
You?
It is not a first choice yote gun;given, but before you head to the calculator to figure out the KE,you MIGHT want to LOOK at the countless VIDEOS that are out with SEVERAL 22 WMR coyote kills ON them.
Of the 2 choices to choose from, get the 223........

100% agree.
The actual hunting of coyotes requires centerfire;I would have that tattoo'd on my a$$..........b ut targets of opportunity being what they *are*........
If I was in dangerous bear teritory, and I dont give a chit if they are hibernating or not,I would be carrying 2 rifles;one for wolves and one for not wolves.

I agree totally...you use WHAT you have...when the occasion rises..I shot coyotes twice last year w/my .22 pistol...was out checking some fox/coyote traps and SAW coyotes that hadnt seen me yet( that's unusual now..BOTH times they were flushing birds.)...snuck to a good spot sat down and called ....shot one at 15' the other time at about 40' with my pistol....one of the biggest calling thrills I've had in years.... didnt have a call...just used my vocals to immitate a rabbit on both occasions..HARD on the throat.. lynx

Just killed a moose at 1,000 yds and stopped a charging Griz with mine. Greatest big game thumper of all .22 magNUMB.

223 would be a better choice, along with the big caliber pistol on my side up there. the 22 mag is a great little, and I say little gun. I too have killed yotes with mine, and love it. But if I lived up in wolf county, the last gun of all my guns I would carry to take an incidental wolf would be my favorite, the 22 mag. I use mine for cats and varmints. I have killed yotes out at 75 yards with it also, but anything further it won"t slice the cheese. I hit one at 100 yards and lost it. Last thing you want to do is track a hurt wolf in my opinion, or lose one to its den like I did with my 100 yard yote. The 223 is a great priced round, he can get bullets for cheap, look into military surplus ammo. And the good thing is if he has one at 250 yards, he can kill it. I would hate to be in the woods and have a nice wolf out of range because of lack of bullet to kill it. Just my .02 cents.

Incidental game ..... a .22 Win Mag. by far!
Coyotes ............. a .22 mag would be usable under very controlled conditions but a .223 would be a vast improvement.
Wolves ..... I would say the .22 mag would be a shade better than a sharp stick! For hunting that is!!
Bears ....... something that reliably makes a BIG HOLE!!
My choice would be a Marlin which a big hole in the front and a Simms recoil pad on the back!
Second choice would be a two gun setup ..... the CZ 527 American with a moderate powered scope in .223 and a suitable handgun with a big hole in front for the bears.

You might consider one of those combination guns w/a rifle and a 12ga slug barrel, ain't much gonna withstand damage like that... just don't miss!
