just read- The trappers who say muskrat lure is useless may have never used a good one
and of course the answer is- All Call- only thing that kept muskrats in traps for 55 years-
my answer- if you need lure, learn how to trap rats-
I read- made small depression with my foot- lured with carrot and lure- had a rat every set--then- wonders- he forgot bait- and just used lure- and guess what, muskrat in every set- well nimrod- take it one step further- forget the bait AND lure -and still, you'd have muskrat in every set-
for the last time- ALL CALL works-it attracts rats- so does anise, rat pieces, mink pieces, fish, carrots, apple, and anything and everything you want to list-
but you DO NOT need lure to catch the SAME amount of rats in the SAME time frame-
I know Im old school- but I really tihnk that the old ways- that of knowing WHERE to put traps- is a dying art.
If you can't look at rat habitat- and I don't care WHAT type- and not catch them on locaiton- then I don't know what to tell you-

name ONE setup, where lure would outproduce blind- ADC job where you have to kill 100 % an the dens are better than 20 foot down the the banks 100 % rocks so the workin foot traps are a pain, here is where a good float AND lure has helped put 100's in my pocket. Also I must mention that I have done this on private lakes where their members where the fastest thieves in the county so they had to be put out at night and pulled in the early AM. My lure might not have been a bought $ 3.50 per oz "rat lure" but cherry, anise , apple QUAILTY OIL with green grass and white potato did the trick.

Yes but those muskrats dont swim the whole time, they have to hit the bank somewhere. Alot of times even when I make a pocket set in heavy grass and slice through roots I generally have a rat the next day, if they are around.

I take issue with calling an unbaited pocket a blind set, the pocket sucks them in as good as any lure or bait has every pulled anything over a set, a blind set means you put the trap where there already going, if something is pulling them over your set its not blind, lure is great on rats in the form of a hole in the bank

Yea, I wouldnt call it a blind set technically, but they were talking about lure or no lure.

we can dicker aobut technicalities all night- and shavign a bank, adding sticks still makesi t a lbind set- but making an inpression doesn't?
so lets call it baited and unbaited-
floats work as good with or without lure-
the resting point is all te "lure" needed-
on fast water- the bototm sideso f runs are ideal rat/mink unbaited deptession setl ocations-
one thing many don't think about- rats are very poor against or in current- they go where they go- like corks-
a set put in that calm spot, will take evey rat coming down that "pike"

I would agree with you Steve for "normal" fur trapping but when you getting 50-70 bucks a rat and are all most forced to set and pull traps at night by boat on top of that, floats get set, easy to set and pull. I use lure because I want EVERY advantage possible , I want in and out ASAP. Big difference between ADC and Fur.

pick one:
you need lure to trap rats, then you are either 1) just in a bad habit of using lure when you don't need to, or 2) are a piss poor rat trapper.
I'd say #1 applies to you-

LOL You used the word nimrod, which I've used all my life and never knew the meaning of; Nim·rod Pronunciation: \ˈnim-ˌräd\ Function: noun Etymology: Hebrew Nimrôdh Date: 15th century 1: a descendant of Ham represented in Genesis as a mighty hunter and a king of Shinar

My feelings on rat lure are nuetral.
"If you can't look at rat habitat- and I don't care WHAT type- and not catch them on locaiton- then I don't know what to tell you-"
What do you do when you cant get on location?
