You can't.
You will have to wait till you get good thick Ice that you can walk on, or wait till It melts.

Question for you Beav. Last suumer you were talking about trapping some deep water rats. How did that turn out and what methods did you use?Coalking

It worked out well I took my friend with me so one of us could maneuver the boat and the other guy set the traps. We cut extra long stakes and In the deepest water we just shoved the stake In the hut. We only had 2 wring offs. But I attribute that to using #1.75 and #2s. We killed rats In 2 and 3" of water without any losses. We did lose 6 traps, didn't know there were any beaver In that marsh but soon found out when we caught 3 and the other beaver cut off a bunch of stakes and carried away 6 traps.

Yep all the small ponds and marshes are froze over. And It doesn't look like they will be opening up any time soon unless we get a warm spell near the end of the month.

Out on the rat huts and in the cat tails It's not to much of a problem since the rats and coon get tangled up pretty fast and don't go far. Even the three beaver were right at the hut all tangled up. But the ones that weren't caught hauled away the stakes and traps.

Beavers and otters are always fun when muskrat trapping! They always are in water over your waders...which makes it even better! Just wish I had a camera man for a few of those times.

Any tips on how to set up for 'rats when there is 1/4" of ice? Well, it depends where you are setting. I always like setting up ponds when there is just a bit of ice, because the runs and holes are usually icefree and easy to spot. And of course, on the little creeks a little bit of ice on the edges is no big deal. I'm assuming Beav is talking foothold trapping or deep marshes?

well, unfortunately up here we dont really get what you would call "a little ice." We had about 1/4" yesterday, and it hasn't gotten above 25 degrees since. Over the span of a week, the beaver pond will probably have 6" on it. It will probably have a foot by the 1st of dec. It is to much effort to try to trap anything when you have to chop through 1 1/2' to 3' of ice...per set!!!

Have you not heard of chain saws. Just poke the cut out piece under the ice and use it as a guide to block your sets for later.
