Minnesota, like them so well use very little else for rats.Get one rat every night in a 110 or five at atime in colony.Spoiled by them, don't like to even set anything else.Applications are end less, just use imagination. Not just for runways.

Does MN have a size limit? The reason I'm asking is I'm a transplant from PA (1st season in MN trapping) and after viewing the trapping regs i don't recall seeing anything mentioned.

The official word from the DNR is that there is no size limit. I emailed them and asked and they returned an answer of no limit.

I'll be like someone I know on this one.....
never used them, but cannot believe that they could even begin to replace footholds on my line in the number of rats harvested.

Missouri allows the use of colony traps, limited to a 6" opening.

We voted to legalize there use at our spring public hearings but I'm not sure how soon we will be able to use them. Bureaucratic red tape. I don't think anyone Is saying they are going to replace a foot hold or a body grip. But It will be another tool that can catch you some more rats and I can think of of places where they would be more effient then any other type trap.

The Beav is correct.
They are a wonderfull tool in their place.
They are bulky but they will out produce footholds and conis in some instances such as where you find a lot of den holes.
You place the colonies in front of the holes and you usually get more than 1 rat each day until the den is cleaned out. Plus any mink which tries to steal your rat is likely to be added to the day's take.
NHaturally if you have nothing but a bare bank, you would be better off with baited sets, but the colony trap has places where it is king.

I'ver heard about those areas with all the den holes.
and I've also heard of the city with streets of gold...............
I've trapped big rivers, big marshes, small marshes, small rivers and creeks- and I can count the number of den holes I've found on both hands.
not saying colony traps aren't a good tool, but in my mind, for me, they would be a real limited tool.

drainage ditches are one of the best spots for colony traps any spot you can use a 110 under water you can use a colony trap , here i can set them 10 times faster than footholds and can catch 3-6 rats at a time insted of just one so iy's a no brainer for me

Beaver houses are a good location to get those beaver house rats prior to beaver trapping and the rats plugging the 330's. Make sure there is a good cable on them there because the beaver will try to move them out of the way.
