Wood ash I've never tried it but the ancients used to make soap out of lye and lard. They got the lye by leaching water thru wood ash. I understand that hard wood makes the best lye. Have a good one just

dishwasher and double helping of detergent. Yes I took RK's advice last year works great, also white vinegar takes rust off overnight and very cheap. For those who do not want the wife to shoot them!!

LOOK AROUND!!! Quit being lazzzzzzy.... they outlawd(actually just quit carrying)the usual... SINCE then I've found NUMEROUS places that carry what you need!!! Start readin the labels...sodium hydroxide or caustic lye is what you want.... it's NOT a matter of just cleaning the rust as it is cleaning EVERYTHING. In my town...they make you sign for iodine....for muratic acid... 99% quit carying the drano... HOWEVER look around!!!! JUST bought some today!! lynx

Best advice I got on this subject was "why bother" Yep, it caught me by surprise too but I took it from a man who catches more fox than anyone.........and guess what? He was right. Don't need it. I just boil in clean water, wax, and that's it. Same results I had as when I boiled with Lye, or Saniflush.

I think that we get into cleanliness TOOOOOO much when it comes to traps. Now don't barrage me with hate mail for saying that . From my experience a good pressure washing or boiling in clean water and then treat them however you normally would and you are good to go.

I hear ya MR, Ive waxed, dyed, dipped over coon toes and rabbit foots in a hurry. spray dishwasher down with 409 before degreasing new traps. Hard to get busted when no evidence left behind.

Rich, They also have a tablet thing you can put in your dishwasher to clean it out. We have alot of iron in our water and the inside gets real rusty. The wife puts one of those things in the dishwasher and it looks like new. Can't see how it could hurt to have a few traps in there with it!!!!

I agree also but the man ask how to get rust off so I told him what he wanted to know.

I like the vinegar and water clean up also. It gets the newly acquired flake rust off nicely. I do like to baking soda rinse/soak to neutalize the acid as much as is possible. One can just rinse and wax too I have done that many times. I do like to clean the rust build up off to better examine the traps also from time to time.

For those of you who simply boil in water, how about deodorizing the traps that are skunked?

Go to the paint department at walmart or any other store and get some Trisodium Phosphate. Boil in that, it's used as a prepaint cleaner and used to be(?) used as a pre-bluing cleaner for guns.
