I use a dirt hole type trench set. My dirtholes are ussally pretty big, I use a power drill and a 3 inch auger.
Can anybody recommend a good lure or bait that really draws the digging reaction? I have been using O gormans, Big horns medicine. It's a snake based lure that really seems to make them dig. Just wondering if any one can recommend any thing else?
Thanks

I may be the odd man here but I don't want a critter digging at my sets. I have had to many critters come In digging and get the trap buried and have no possible chance to catch It. When a fox or coyote dig they have In most cases both feet In the hole It's hard to catch them this way. I know you are suppose to catch them before they start digging but that doesn't all way's happen.

the distinction is this- I don't want them digging at the set- but I sure want them to WANT to dig out whatever lure is in that hole. I don't want the one sniff and gone stuff-
If I do my job, he wil be caught before he digs- but wanting to dig, keeps him there and more importantly, makes him go to the hole to work it. While a canine sure does dig with both feet in the hole....he needs to get those feet TO the hole..... and do so that, he walks....

Beav, I use a deep Dirt hole "trench" type set. And yes, I want him to dig. I want him to give what's down the hole more than a passing wiff. Guess if curisosity is all he finds in my lure, I will most likly miss him.
I use the trench type dirt hole because I have a very high deer population and for me, the deer don't like to step down in the trech.

I all ways found a good chunk of bait was enough to keep that animal Interested In the hole. And a lure to get him up to It. So you guys don't ever get any covered traps do to digging? Or traps pulled out of the bed. My system may miss a few but If they came In once I will have a good chance In them coming back for a second go round. There a good lures that will keep animals working the set but don't necessarily cause them to dig. Then there are the critters that just plain dig no matter whats at the set.

Maybe one or twice a year I miss a animal due to digging. I would rather have the digging response than not. But that's just what works for me.

I probably miss 5 or 6 a year due to digging but I feel like those will be back because they wanted whats in the hole. What really bothers me is those pattern misses with one or 2 tracks in the dirt pattern. If I start seeing much of this it makes me question my lure for sure

Anybody else besides Steve and the Beav? There are alot of top notch trappers on this sight. I'd even like to continue the discussion about whether you want them to dig or not.
Thanks

I'd rather have them dig it than roll in it.
When I go back after season and look around, many of the lure holes are dug out, with what seems to be no pattern of certain lures over others. That leads me to beleive that lure brand is not the main factor.
Then again, the one that makes the target work the set right now, is the one I want. As soon as I think I'm seeing a pattern, it changes. Reminds me of fishin.

I agree with Steve on this......
I want something in the "hole" that makes them WANT to dig, not just stop down wind, head bob and move on........ I think the guys that are/were sucessful with M44's would have some great input on this.......as what they needed was a lure/bait that would elicit a BITE response.

Mink will make them dig, castor will make them dig in a hole and face rub if not and higher up. Bobcat tainted makes them dig, fresh p-dog makes them dig, the more rancid/broken down something is the more response to rolling you will see. Skunk in small amounts is good at a set- alot and you get into more rolling response. I had one the other day that caught 2 skunks prior, you could see in the snow and the smell on the ol' dog coyote he rolled in the skunks and then came and worked the set with the trap. Between the skunk and his rank smell he was a real joy!
Rattlesnake is a good base and will get good digging response as long as it isn't to far rotted then way more rolling. Depends on the side of the hole as well, a real large hole and they will apporoach and get more reaction to the smells- more feet walking, a smaller hole and you will get more digging quicker is what I have found.
If you have lures that may elcite a rolling or rubbing behavior just keep them higher let there feet keep moving over the trap pattern and keep their nose or face rubbing at the bone or back higher up. You will still catch them well.

weasel glands as well as civit musk will make them also dig.....i have found that stefs catachottier(sp) will make them dig to china....when i use that in late season and when i go back in the spring it looks like a hand gernade goes off in the hole....im currently working on a lure formulation and as soon as my ingredients arrive and i get it mixed up i plan on setting up the trail cam to do some eyes on homework....
and trappincoyotes38 gave some really good insight and advice in his post.....if you see a rolling responce to your lure or bait you can set for a back foot catch so the trap is away from the hole and not in the rolling zone of the hole.....

Do you think some animals are more prone to digging? I have found less digging at a dirt hole from coyotes a little more from reds but In my experince greys are digging fools.

I agree Beav greys do love to dig plus I have found when I use a loud lure or bait in grey country I get a lot of rubbing at the bait hole.I like a mild lure for greys and Stefs Pikauba has become my favorite actually got a minty smell to it

OGormans Revenge.
Slim Pedersen makes a lure that he gave me a few years ago, and it causes an extreme digging reaction. Whoever the guy is that sells his lure makes a comparable lure called Entrencher. I have not tried that lure have only tried Slims version.

I don't get any digging on pure mink glands, smashed and tossed down hole.
