I have never used polyfill, those that have, on dogless traps, did you have any trouble? It might speed things up?

17hmr- I was told not to use polyfil and the instructions that come with the traps do, if I'm not mistaken, tell you not you use stuff under the pan on dogless.
started the season out with screens cut a scant to small, and had problems with them buckling and bubbling. That caused scratching at the trap. So after a couple of days, I went back 100% to polyfil for the rest of the season here, and 100% so in KS.
Had zero problems, and think I'm going back to polyfil permanently.

Was it faster setting than with screens?

by far- just in ease of setting the trap without having to get below the jaws with the screen, saves a lot of time.
The only reason for me for screens was the bigger "kill area"- am coming to the opinion that is overrated.

17, same address? I'll send you all the poly I have left. It will freeze........but where you are, likely not as big an issue?

BB- it won't freezeenough to matter, if you stretch it out- a small piece marble sized and pull it fluffy.
I do recommend, for as cheap as it is, to toss what you have left over and start new each year.
Old stuff will absorb odors before use- never had a problem with new.

I never had good results with it had too much digging from mice and rats with it. I use brown coffee filters will conform nicely and I have little problems with them cheap and easy and no digging like poly fill and screen is over rated been saying that for along time! If you use a trap that is built for coyotes jaw/pan ratio screen does little to benefit and can cause more issues with toe catches IMHO

no digging at all with clean polyfil- only digigng occurs with contaminated stuff-

Steve when you tried the screen did you cut it or did you press it through the notch??

marky- the problem was the screens were just a tad shorter than the jaw widths- they wouldn't lock down.
I tried it both ways-
with right sized screens, I just pull it through the notch and they lay flat and nice.

I had 3-4 traps I couldn't fire.......4# hammer to fire them....not my boot, nothing, rain, freeze, thaw, rain, freeze.......the waxed sand was perfect.....the rock solid frozen brick under the pan was polyfil......maybe too much polyfil.......still froze up like a brick.
Waxed dirt, waxed sand, steel screen.......have sure worked well for me.

Bristle it will absorb water over time.
I think the big key to using it is what Steve said above. Use a small piece and stretch it out.
I used to take a ball of it and shove it under the pan. This left folds and creases in it where water could seep into it, and then freeze.
Even using a small piece though it can still freeze over a long period of freeze/thaw.

oh and I do use it with my dogless traps and have no problems.
I'm not sure why the instructions would say not to use it with dogless traps.
Steve?

That's a huge advantage to WS or WD, set a strong trap, cover it good and leave it ALONE.......no messing around, let it rain, freeze all it wants.......traps are ready for critters..........sure I have some hours involved in making WS/WD in the off season......but I sure don't mess around in season with remakes after rains.....

I agree that screens that are too small su@k. I guess Ill make my own screens again and get a bag of polyfill to try. I am a little worried about keeping it clean while running, and about the mice, when I was useing wax paper the mice deal was very bad in this area.

I kept it clean and aired it out, stored in zip lock freezer bags and it has an odor that rats and mice can smell I'm convinced, maybe in your areas you don't have as many rats and mice, but I wouldn't use it anymore in this area as it did attract those rodents, many of my sets are in areas of yucca and areas rats and mice like, so I'll leave the poly fill to those that have little digging while using it.

don't know- certainly as many rats and mice in wooded farmland area than in semi desert.

NEVER had an issue with poly...and yup on the dogless I use..I ALWAYS use poly...nothing else does as well and LESSENS the chance of a TINY pebble keeping the pan from firing..

odorless to you or I but I doubt it is 100% odorless as it is made from synthetic materials. Tman I had the same issues in NW Iowa as I did out west. All I know is it was dug at much more than other items I have used in the past. So I'm doubting the 100% odorless. Plus coffee filters are 100% bio degradeable

I tried useing some Montanas this year and I use insulation on all of my Cat and Coyote sets but I had alot of problems with the dogless traps either being set off or dug up. Never had a problem with any of my dog on traps. Never did figure it out.
