You will find that they work better if you would change / reverse the angle that your digger is sharpened, plus they are lots easier to re-sharpen each season if beveled the other way.

I built my spade useing all pipe. black gas pipe for the handle and the spade was built out of bigger pipe cut in half then I hit it with a grinder. its a bit heavy but does a good job in the hard ground. I welded 1/2 gas pipe to the hammer, after I busted the wood handle out and I hardly ever use the puller I welded on the hammer, I always use the wrecking bar. The auger is a bulb auger from lowes cost under $6. Seems to do well in our ground you just have to get use to working it. I'll probably go get the one Rk660 makes ,its a better auger.

Freak, the one you got from me about 3 yrs back wasnt made with the leaf spring digger blade I use now. Aint no tearing them off when welded on 4 sides.

o`g,`s just break in half, not failed welds, but the metal claw breaks in half. had 3 in a row do it, 3 different hammers, not same one 3 times. I`m not a welder but apparently in he welding process the claw is made brittle by over heating or something. repairing is a waste also as I had a competant welder re-weld the claw on and then they just break next to tge repair weld.

Used one of O'Gorman's 4 1/2 pounders for a long time with no problems... never liked the balance of it tho... bought one of his 3 pounders when they came out ..like it a lot more.

Bob, All hammers made like O'Gs will fail because of the digging blade not being lined up with the hammer when the hammer is being used. "IF" the digging blade is put on the end of the cross peen of the hammer and "IS" lined up with the hammer it will last for ever.
I have "modified" at least a dozen of the O'G hammers that have been broken and all are still working until the handles finally get wore in two.

Robert, can you post a pic. I want to make a couple up this summer. Have a buddy who owns a spring shop so materials aren’t a problem. Thanks

Mine seem to break at the handle right under the head. I'd like to get a Estwing hammer done up with the all metal handle.

easier said than done for a hard rolling guy tman. speed is of utmost importance and with speed comes error. but the speed trumps handle error in value. plus lots of night running, runningin downpours, etc etc. we need indestructable equiptment to allow for human and climactic failures.

Extended use of steel handled hammer = bad elbow. Been there, no fun. Never again for me, fiberglass or wood. Yeah they break, handles are cheap, elbows are not.

if you are running that fast you are missing the stake more than hitting it...... haste does indeed create waste...

A heavy hammer with a leaf spring blade and a steel handle. Had mine for 10 yrs now. No problems.

Here's a pic of what I use on the line. Really cuts down on the number of things I have to carry. Made it myself at a place I use to work, all made out of scrap. It's sitting next to a 3 or 4 pound hammer just for size reference.

I bend my wrist when I use a hammer/small sledge. Doesn't the trowel hit your forearm?
I agree on the elbow thing. Vibration is a bad thing.
