Bob Custer from Pa. makes and sells a fine bender for making J hooks and S hooks. Its very reasonable for the time you have in making one and material it cant be beat. I think it use to be $20.00 or so.They do a great job once you get on to it. The parts you make are better and stronger then most factory traps.

Well after having a cat bend out a #6 heavy duty J hook I've been thinking more and more about getting a bender. Don't worry all my traps J hooks will be welded next year.

I know trappers love to tinker. But aren't some things just eaiser to buy ? I agree. I think there are just some things people should just buy. I just cringe sometimes when I see the undersized stuff people use for their terminal tackle. An example is making j-hooks out of any old nail such as one with a head just big enough to not go through the hole in the swivel or trap frame. (yet)

yes you are prob right it would be a lot easier just to by them but i do like to tinker with stuff like that, i figured out to make them the other night can make one in about 10 seconds out of 20 penny nails, if yall are interested heres how i did mine, i took 2 peices of 5/16 round rod about 4" long and welded the bottom and sides of the rod to a peice of 2" angle iron so about 2" or sticks above the angle then the hole unit can be clamped to a table or what ever you want, then take a 1/4" nut driver and slip nail into nut driver nut driver being hollow on the shank then hold the nail head with a pair of good pliers and about 1/4" down from the nail head will be the end of the nut driver now make about a 30 degree bend with the nut driver now you have the straight part of the j hook where the bend starts now slip the nail between the two 5/6" rods the nail head will be kinda locked on the edge of one of the rods just sllip the nut driver to the edge of the other rod and all you have to do is bend with the nut driver back around to the other side of the nail and you have a pretty good looking j hook a little bit bigger than a regular j hook but not to big.hope this helps some its kinda hard to explain but gave it a try.

Aren't 20D nails more expensive then rivets?

With all these trap suppply companies manufacturing things...you would think someone would make a long shanked #6 rivet.

I make all my own swivels. Have been for years. They swivel better and Ive used drag chain that had them in it for a 4-wheeler tow chain. I know how strong they are. I can make them a lot cheaper than i can buy swivels. Heck Montgomery fur sells them for almost $9 a doz.

I have a bender made by Bob Custer. The main thing I like about it is it gives you the longer shank.
My biggest problem seems to be that first bend. It's either too "right anglish", or not enough...
I've never really timed myself doing them, because I only make a few at a time. I would guess I can do a few dozen an hour if I really got going on them.

One nice thing about using a 20p nail is that the head on them is bigger than those on the rivet that you get when you buy them.

Common nails are better for this than sinkers. If you don't know the difference, ask a real hardware store or building center.

almost $9 a doz.?
sure that isn't a 100 price?
that would be a great price if so- I sell them for $13 a hundred. $1.75 a doz.

I think $9 a doz. is for sterling swivels, not just the J hooks.
