So a Zagman will you let us in on the secret of what lure and set you use LOL Just Joking I hear it all the time from people on these sights "Hey such and such what kind of lure is a good lure or what lure did you use to catch those big #s on." Sometimes I of course read back the lure they are making LOL

If I could sit down with a very successful trapper and was only allowed to ask 5 questions, one of them wouldn't be What manufactuers lures do you find most effective. Might be #6 though.

I don't think there is magic in a bottle but on my line I get better reactions from certain lures for example lots of people like a lure with that skunk smell in it and I do too when after cats and where I know yotes are but my main target is greys and I just don't do well with that skunky lure on them.

Good point Tony.
I always set two close dirtholes on my canine line and I keep records to see what seems to be hitting. There are two lures I use in conjunction quite a bit and 90% of the time I will have a fox on the one but the coyotes usually go for the other.
I think trappers in general come to conclusions too quickly when evaluating a lure, but I have seen this pattern enough that ON MY LINE, different species of canines seem to go for different lures.
For what it's worth, my very best fox lures have a cheesy, sweaty type odor. Coyotes seem to hit a more sulfurous type lure first.

I also want to add, I think I could go with one lure for both fox and coyotes and I doubt it would really hurt the catch...but it just seems like when they have a choice within a few feet, they are a little selective toward one or the other.

I think it does. yes, I , you and lot of other guys can catch coyotes using almost anything but... How fast would you harvest your coyotes with secondary lures? I'm telling you this because I'm aware of some testing done with my stuff and I read many testing coyote lures paper. And from what I've seen so far... Only a hand full or two hands full of the "same lures/ makers" are always there on the top list and most of the other stuff are just... I don't know what ... ;D What does it means... It means that coyotes are more susceptible of being caught in our traps using these top lures because these lures are just more effective attracting coyotes then the others. Yes, trappers still need to catch them and I know you can. Give a top lure to a beginner... he won't do as good as you even if you go on his ground, using secondary lure. You're just better catching coyotes then him and its pretty easy to understand... Coyotes are not coon. Let's talk beaver lures a minute.... Most beavers up here are trapped in their ponds. ( small areas ) Any piece of pure castor near the bank will attract beavers the first night. You will catch beavers. Now.... Do the same thing in the fall on a large river where sign are almost invisible ( trails etc...) using a piece of straight castor compared to a well build ed beaver lures that has lot of calling power... You'll see that straight castor is not the only way to go as far as attracting them to a trap set and catching them. My 2 ยข Stef

Stef, I am with you......I said reputable lure makers, but still understand that a guy can have one or two good lures in production and a lot of junkers as well.
So, I think it common for a good trapper to use one or two lures from several lure makers vs. having all their eggs in one basket.

yes saw it after I post...thanks...LoL
It might be true with some but let's look at it little further. Its possible that if you're using lure from Joe Blow's lures and you had luck and success using his #1 and #2 lures on coyotes. #1 and #2 might be his biggest selling lures too.. We don't know. You tried on your coyote line let say his #3 and #4 and reported limited success using them or nothing.... There's a high probability that you won't use his #3 and #4 lures next season but you will still use in the future his #1 and #2 because you had luck and confidence in them.
Now, for another customer trapper who's using Joe Blow's lures maybe that trapper didn't have success using #1 and #2 but #3 and #4 are his best let say Grey or Red fox lures.
The lure add advertised them as K-9 lures. So in other words.... His #3 and #4 are not junk. They might be junk for you on your yote line... But not for the trapper who's using them on foxes in a different geographical trapline.
Joe Blow's #1-2-3 and 4 are all great k-9 lures. We can catch all k-9s with them but #1 and #2 might be superior for coyotes and #3-#4 just averaged coyote lures and so on....
I think that you're right and that way.... you can eliminated the ones who are just so so on your particular line and target species

Good lure makes a difference on yotes no doubt in my mind, and the more ya have to hide the catch, the more ya have to set where ya can insead of where ya should and the more yahoos that ya have setting near your area smearing dozens of different lures on hundreds of trees or in buckets for bobcats the more a person can appreciate them, and coon is just as important if not more so depending on the population and food suplly and time of year, a person catches plenty of coons at times so loses respect for him but never knows how many go by his sets, just like how many go under his snares, around or over is 220s in trails or over his 160 boxes, my opinion is luremakers fail us in reguard to coon baits and lures, once a person just works himself to death in the late season for a hundred coon that a fellow in iowa can get in november in one or two nights his respect for coon lures and baits go to about zero, rk660 told one time on here of coon boxes working well one year and the next not catchin much of anything is a prime example, give a fellow a bait that cures that problem and now that would be a coon bait.

very, very true.
Most trappers only trap coon during the "bulk up" time- when anything works. Dec and Jan coon react to things in my nind almost 100% different than Oct/early Nov coon and then Feb/march coon.
