As far as I can remember.... All the long tail weasels I caught in my life came from marten, fisher, coon cubby sets. I never caught a single one in a rat trap baited on the trigger. "Hermine".. our small tail weasel... I caught plenty in rat traps since I'm about 12 years old...LoL I can remember when I was a teenager... there was an old volkswagen beattle half buried in a dump.... I always set up that location with 2 rat traps inside the car and I averaged around 5-6 short tail weasels each season in that car ;D

Agree with Stef. Bigger baits work better for me.Front entrance to the box is at the top of the pannel as opposed to the bottom. Because of chance to catch marten we have a limited size opening allowed for an entrance. Most times a piece of beaver is used. close to the size of a small fist. sometimes use tooth paste as a lure. most just beaver. The rat trap has a plastic pan with a sensetive and stronger setting. The trap is mounted inside the cedar box with the pan about four inches or so from the opening. The beaver is put in the box unfrozen and freezes to the cedar bottom. Weasel has to work to get at it and the trap is far enough away from the bait that mice usually dont get caught. Many marten trappers utilize a similar setup. Sometimes two boxes.

Don't you guys keep breaking the plastic pans? I use the smaller metal ones. They step on them anyways!

Coukldn't get the rat traps to work because mice would either steal the bait or get caught before the weasel came back, about a pound of jack can stand some mice for awhile, don't know how anyone gets the rat traps to work with mice around
PS- how big of a weasel is that? it's a 110 suitcase job

he haven't been able to get teh rat traps to work just for that very reason, everytime we check them theres a mouse in it, gets rather annoying pretty quickly too !!
