All I'm relaying is what I was told.
I'd say when you have good cats a few inches aint going to matter.
When you have eighty to a hundred dollar cats like ours a couple inches of spots might matter. Hell I dont know.
Couple inches make a difference? You ever sell a 31 inch coon vs a 32 inch coon.

NAFA wants the front legs left in, less chance of getting a pelt tore when they are drummed.
As for making the TOP LOT, it takes a darned good cat....The TOP LOT normally consists of around ten head and have been bringing $900-$950.

Lynxy you couldn't handle the $500 average if you did sell to them, especially if your cats are all as good as the ones in the picture.

The difference between a 34" and a 36" cat can be significant. I've seen years where it made a C note. I was told that a 36" cat will work on almost all garments, shorter than that limited the cat to trim and short coats and such. Alan Steele told me that his conversations with one end user told him that the leg fur was the best piece of fur on the cat and encouraged us to leave them long and put up well. With that said I can't say that I've seen any premiums paid or cats being docked because of it. Most of the Nevada guys put them up the same way anymore so it's hard to get much edge on your put up. However if you don't meet a certain standard your sitting in with a bunch of really polished goods. It hurt last year if your stuff didn't shine because there was plenty that did. I believe I was the one that started pinning the back legs and boraxing and skinning the white. There were years where I beat the sale average by $100 or more. Then everybody started doing it and now mine are probably only in the top 10-20%. Some guys stuff looks like it's been to the taxidermist. As far as making stuff with leg fur Tony Diebold cut the front legs off of a hundred cats back in the 70's and had a bedspread made. Beautiful!! Joel Here are some old pics, I do abetter job on the fronts now, tomorrow I take a pic and put it up. These aren't mine but that is what $800 cats look like.

Hey Joel,
Any chance you'd do a step-by-step pictorial on how you board a cat? I think I've got it down, but it would be nice to see the Master at work on one.

I stand corrected Joel.
I should have clarified and said a couple inches of leg isnt going to make or break those fantastic cats you fellers have.
Robert, Greg Schroeder of NAFA is starting to teach in his demo's to leave the legs out FWIW.

Brent now we know where all the leg fur goes LOL. A couple 100 bed spreads each year. What do you think the retail cost of one of those in queen/king size would be after labor and mark up? 3000-4,000?
You bet if I have any more questions I'll be sure to ask, I never caught your buyers docking procedure on the front leg fur? Good day.

Typical cat for my area. They do come a little better but not very often with a good belly like the westerns. See how much better the ones joel is holding with the legs pinned together. I figured out after I stretched them how to do it with an adjustable stretcher.

There's a guy around me that gets about 50 a year for the last 30 years and he swears that you need to split the legs and pin straight up. I would do whatever your buyer suggests as long as they don't rip off during tumbling. I've seen alot of top guys who swear they know the only way to do it but ten others do it different nd they all get good prices
