it seems like the original premise has been lost- and that is - DOES a 330, 1 o n1- offer a BETTER chance to take a beaver.
If you say yes, then you do- I don't see an difference.

Guys, I catch roughly 20-25 otter every season in castor mounds. RN understands and explained why this happens in regards to the lure used. Where is this post by rn that has been referred to by Robert and others?

Steve: a 330 at a dam break often just catches a stick! It's the type of set that a CDR shines at.

CoonDuke, Rn may have deleted his post, don't know what happened to it.
Basically any castor based lure that has Tonquin musk in it or any mink musks will attract otter. Several of the better beaver lures on the market do use Tonquin in them, including mine.
There are alos a lot of "all purpose" lures being marketed that are casor based that use Tonquin as well.
Tonquin is a known otter attractant and does produce otter regularly in castor mound type sets.
Hope this answers your questions.

Thank you Robert. I have heard before that Tonquin is attractive to otters, but it is nice to know that the information is backed up by experience and numbers using the ingredient.

Curosity will kill a cat.If otter get back strong I will make some castor mound sets in known otter creeks.Right now though give me a blind set I have caught a few at castor mounds but nothing I would put alot of faith in.I have also tried several so called otter lures before and I won't even go there.

Coldsteel, I am NOT advocating using castor mounds as an otter set, just that "some" beaver lures do attract otter from time to time and should be avoided if you are not targeting otter.

I hear you Robert.Right now I don't think I will have a problem with beaver or otter.Creeks around here are almost dry and just about every beaver pond I trapped last year is dry with grass growing 3 feet high. They had to move to the rivers and lake to survive some I am willing to bet didn't make it at all

Coldsteel, Beaver numbers are decimated from your area west through Louisiana and as far north as Tn and Arkansas.
I have no idea if this enough of the total harvest nation wide to have much affect on the market but believe it will at least some what.

Robert - Thanks for clarifying things earlier. I wouldn't mind being able to increase chances to pick up otters at certain sets like for instance maybe some mink sets when otters are worth targeting. A lot of sets in the water could mean good additional otter catches same as a lot of rat sets can help on the mink. I'm just looking to learn anything when I can. I already have quite a bit of experimenting to do but will certainly add this to the to do list.
One question - Robert and anyone please. Is anything known about whether mink are attracted to, repelled by or indifferent to tonquin musk?

Mountainman, I am sorry bit can not help you with that question. I just do not know.
Here in Missouri and Iowa are the only places where I have mink and most of my mink are caught in coon sets.

Robert, Thanks anyway. I suspect that is something that maybe hasn't been done or done a lot of because some thoughts about mink behavior were different in the old days. I'll do some work on that possibly with some collaboration. It will take a while to set up correctly and do some serious tests. The results of that will be reported when a conclusion can be made.
