I toss all the wax- it takes 15 lbs of wax, to fill a turkey fryer enough to do 4 montana sized traps or 5 1.75 sized traps at a time. A small price to pay for clean wax.
if someone is doing 3-4000 traps, than it would make sense to save wax for years, but waxing 200 or so traps in a small pot with less wax takes but 3 hours.
I also wax traps during the season, and even though cleaning them at a car wash or with a power washer, you still don't get them boiled and dyed clean- and it takes a heck of a lot less than 1200 or so recleaned traps, to leave junk in the wax and to contaminate it.
Its one thing I don't have to worry about.
as far as removing the wax from pot- as mentioned, heat the sides of the pot.

shoulda been more specific.....I KNOW how to get the wax out with heating.....I was looking for a method WITHOUT heating...thus, the dented turkey pot!
I like the idea of setting upside down in the sun.....will try that.
Ironically, I also never worried about the sludge in the bottom.....probably worrying about something that does not matter.

Zag, if you are in a hurry on the sunshine method just slip a black garbage bag down over your pot and it will melt it faster due to drawing more heat.

I think you are right- after all, that sludge is there last time I waxed w/no problems...
but... the story of " I had out 200 traps and had al lrefusals- found out my wax was contaminated.. so had to redo everything..."
whether story or myth don't know.... but for $30..... I've spent $30 more foolishly before and will again.
the sun works- but its sit it out and come back much later. heating it takes a minute and the result and melted wax on the pot is the same.

I have been using part of a 55 gal. drum cut off about 15 to18 in. or so for my wax and dye. The wax goes on the fish fryer, and the dye gets heated by wood since I have a saw mill and plenty of scraps. This way once things get heated up I can do several 100 in an hr or so. Can do 2 to 3 doz. at a time. As far as changing out the wax , been using the same for 5 years now. If you think wax might be contaminated do your traps early and let them air for a month or so, and there should be no problem.

Well now to stir the pot! I use a weed burner to boil my traps in a 55 gallon drum, I use a turkey fryer to wax my traps with a bigger size canner . But were we differ is I check my wax each time and rinse my traps well after dyeing. Its my beleif that dye can really cause you problems if it settles to the bottom of your wax. and you use the wax again . The dye and rust off your traps will Scorch and send a bad smell thru your wax resulting in dug up traps, One way to avoid this is to put your block of wax on two new bars of wax so it melts frist The other way is to chip the black stuff off the bottom. If you try this you'll get less sprung traps IMHO.
