First time I heard coyotes howl CLOSE by. Was in a treestand a little piece off the beaten path. Debating whether to head out and heard the leaves rustling. Sat tight , got dark and then the howling. Unnerved me a little. Hair up on the back of my neck! Was bowhunting , took me awhile to come down. that was 10 or so years ago , first group I knew of in this area. Something to hear when you are thinking deer.Less than 50 yards from me!

Last febuary was calling on the clearcut edge of some heavy timber near Warroad Mn. I was using coyote vocalizations and had a pack of wolves respond. I never saw them so I don't know how many but it sounded like 3-4 really vocal wolves. It was near dark and I was only with my dog. They stayed around howling and yapping for about 10 minutes while I kept quite praying my dog was smart enough to stay put, he did and was probably as scared as I was. I was probably in no real danger but it was one of the times I was glad I had and AR-15 and not my usual bolt gun.
Tim
Steve- Mink really screech when your trapline dog grabs one as it tries to run across a frozen pond. ;D

There are alot of things that makes the pulse quicken especially at night but for me but cats arem my favorite. I love walking to a set and seeing thoes eyes looking out of the brush.
Lions on the other hand evoke a slightly different response. It is more of a sinking feeling followed by intense profanity.

Coming with in inches of sitting on a Copperhead while setting up to turkey hunt just glad it was to cold for him to move fast. ;D heard the leaves move and stopped before i was all the way down. If I could figure out how to post pics I would show ya what gets this old ticker pounding ;D a Feburary Ki-Yute in a Snare, snarling at ya when ya walk up to him. ;D a double on possums will do it also, as it means more gas in the truck

Last season on my first check of the year I caught my first cat, I was so pumped, big smile all day long and couldn't wait to tell someone. Releasing it was just as exciting. I used to think yotes were the real thrill, but cats in my traps is outstanding. Another time last season I snared a coon by the neck and it wrapped around a branch and hung itself just off the ground, that got me pretty excited also (along with another snared coon a few yards away). "Coming with in inches of sitting on a Copperhead while setting up to turkey hunt just glad it was to cold for him to move fast. ;D " woody's story reminded me of the time I was marking timber and kicked (most assuredly by accident!) a rattlesnake. it was after lunch, so I was [fortunately] dragging my feet, rather than stepping. snake rattled and moved away. I, too, began moving away...backwards, at about mach 3, and about five feet in the air gentlemen, that ALSO got my heart pounding!

Seeing your set blowed out on a foggy morning, and hearing the chain and grapple rattle in the nearby bushes; Knowing you have a coyote on the tether; That get's it started for me.
What gets it beating even faster, is sticking your head into the same bushes and finding you were wrong, that it's really an unhappy bear in a coyote trap.

Walkin up to yer first double, seeing 3or4 big flat tails floating on end works pretty good too. Iam kinda partal to settin the hook on one my river rods and feelin that big pull on the other end. I think dropping a speedloader full a 357's in the campfire gets yer blood flowing about as fast as it can .ya'd be suprised how fast ya can snatch them back out. lot a things can get yer blood flowin .Cats & Red fox doin a lil dance really work too. Catching that SOB that has been stealing your traps for the last 3 years and havin yer way with em!
Opening day and every morning after that til the end!
That model River Rat was talkin about.
Coyotes howlin.
Flock of 100+ Flight mallards back peddlin over yer decoys.
Staring at an animal in yer trap while driving and lookin up and realizing yer headin into the crick!
Forgetting to take the safety off while in close to dispatch a skunk, lookin down at the gun cussin, and lookin up to realize yer under FIRE!

CATS thats what gets my heart a pumping ;D those kitties bouncing around in a trap or snare shake me up big time. The most shook up I have ever been was on the cougar hunt last Feb. something about being 8 feet away from that lion out on a ledge did it for me, that was the most excited and shook up I have ever been. ;D

Trap missing in its bed at a pocket set (I'm easy to thrill), rotor on a Beaver Dam s-l-o-w-l-y making its rotation and when you go to set the hook the line saws through your fingers, grunting up a buck to have it run full tilt at ya during bow season, setting dekes in predawn darkness and hearing the splash and calling of mallards that can't make you out yet, flyroddin' largemouth with big poppers, your daughter shoots her first deer while you're watcing from your tree stand 100 yards away, or how 'bout when you're just about ready to drop some eggs onto the hot skillet for breakfast while sandbar camping when the smallies kick in just off the edge of the sandbar and your sweetie grabs her rod and starts running for the point whilst you're still holding the pan and wondering what all the commotion is about . . . and for sure falling through the ice without touching bottom, now that'll get your blood flowing. Especially when you gotta dive back in to retrieve some gear you know you'll never find again come spring.

How about going though a 2' x 4' hole in the ice, while catching bait at night, and coming up to hit your head on the ice, guranteed adrenaline producer!!! Been there, done that.

1. Scantly clad women
2. Double on mink
3. Going down a hill at 45 MPH thinking the road is wet and suddenly realizing it is a solid sheet of ice.

Going up to a cat set on a rimrock and seeing the chain going over the edge!!! Now that's not the pee your pants part...the pee your pants part is bending over to take a look and seeing a mountain lion on the hidden ledge...2' from your face!!! Time to change the shorts!!! later lynx Also tracked down a "runaway" cat and trap one time....(forgot to attach the chain to the drag ;D)...down thru the snow...up the other side of the canyon...into a crevace/cave...climbing up with gun drawn..no cat...going on top and seeing where he came out then looks like he jumped down to a small ledge. Then crawling along the sloped face of the rock to get there...swinging my foot over a large crack THEN seeing a LARGE tom sitting there 3' in front of my face!!!! Nowhere to go...he went right over the top of me!!! Stinking trap chain about tore my ear off....got about an 8" scratch as he pushed off on my arm as he went over...got tangled up in the brush .. and he was mine!!! ;D

Went to Florida bass fishing there was a small piece of ground out about five feet from shore thought I'd take a runnin jump and fish off it. It was that floating stuff I went up to my chest in the water and could only think of cotton mouth. I got out of that water so fast I don't think I got wet. ;D
