I said other because it could be any or all of the above depending on time of year, location, or type of set. But I would say curosity would lead the list. Jeff

Most of the time I say it's Curiosity.

I think they're curious because they are looking for a meal.

I voted for a meal, thats why I use fresh beaver for bait. Jim

I say curiosity, but this poll may be skewed in the fact that, the guys that use bait are presenting a meal, whether the coyote is curious or not, versus those of us that use strictly lure. Something to ponder???

I just target the curioushornyhungryjealous yotes exclusively,so it doesnt matter.

I suppose the reason any thing investigates is out of curiosity. That in no way means there is not a time and place for a "food", "gland" or "curiosity" type lure

Canted? Now that hurts....
But think about it...if curiosity is the #1 reason a coyote works a set..... shouldn't you, as a wise trapper, appeal to that curiosity?
Now be fair..sex ain't curiosity..sex is sex..at least to a coyote. Except for 2, maybe...MAYBE 3 weeks..a coyote is NOT thinking about sex. Matrix sex lures are a myth.
And hungry? I've never caught a skinny coyote. They are the ultimate eating machine. Predator AND scavengers- fruit, grains, fish, fowl, fauna...they are opportunistic and eat quite the variety of things. So...looking for a meal..perhaps...but very few, if any commercial baits are actually edible.
so....curiousity killed the cat....and the ki-yute.

So...is Steve Gappa your Dr. Jekly side or is that Trappnman? ...just curious ;D

Do the two seem different? ...I thought I was pretty consistent..... but the real skinny is...if I need to use administration functions, I need to be logged in as Steve Gappa. If I am, I sometimes reply to posts that catch my eye..or use this name when I need to be "official". I prefer the name trappnman...a name I have used on the internet for almost 4 years... In either case...what one says...the other backs up...

I say the yote is curious by nature and, if he is motivated by annother drive, it will be only after he has investigated the situation.

From what I can gather from my studies, I suspect it is a combination of many factors.
"Hey, what is this? Who in the hell left this on MY territory? Well, I guess they aren't going to get it back. I guess I will just have to eat it on them. Hey!! what just grabbed me? Oh sh-- here comes that Yappa Gappa guy." ;D

WQ- Nonsense! Nowhere in this thread are we guilty of that.
Coyotes have predictible reactions in certain situations and to certian situations. That's pretty much a fact... based on my observations, others observations.. and more importantly, by research.
Trying to deduce a coyotes response to stimuli is no more anthropomorphistic than slapping a coyote along side of the head and when he winces, deduce that it hurt and the coyote felt pain.
