The main competition on my traplines our wolves. They are smart and hunt 365 days a year. Most trappers complain about a lack of beaver in the area but do not put 2 & 2 together when they see piles of wolf nuts on their lines. In my part of the world moose are king and exisit at low numbers because most trappers lack the skill and or desire to harvest wolves. We are allowed to harvest as many as we want using snares and traps, the only problem is that we have the uglist course haired wolves in Canada. Not harvesting wolves is like leaving the barn door wide open. Cheers Jim Very well put. I have seen this with beaver and whitetail deer. In ,"yoopersportsman's" neck of the woods. I have hunted and traped this area since the late 80's. How things have changed. Deer hunting is a lot harder,"late season". Not near the beaver, I use to run across. Now it's common for me to find fresh wolf tracks, on my line and set during Dec. There is a spot, called"Baraga Plains". Wolves are very aggressive , on bear hounds. Last couple of years , hounds men have lost good dogs to the wolves. In 1908, this would not have been put up with.
