Where can one find some wire mesh for making cage traps? I checked home depot and the local farm store with no luck. All they have is fencing material with big holes or regular hardware cloth, neither of which is what I'm looking for.

You can order it from any true value store, I got a 14ga 1x1 inch welded wire 4'x100' roll for about $110 a couple of years ago, no shipping just stopped by and picked it up.

safeguard box trap co will ship any type wire, "C" rings, krimpers etc to anyone. I`ve gotten from valentine and safeguard both. either is light years cheaper than any other sources I`ve investigated.

I've only had a couple of dealings with Valentine but they seem to be good people to do business with. But if you can get a local place to order it for you that might be the way to go with shipping being so high now with fuel costs.

Its getting hard to find local, try a smaller lumber yard as they will more readily order out of their master catalog than will the big chain type hardware stores. I had a wholesale source in Colorado at one time that may be an option for you, but they require a tax ID no. to buy from. I dont have their name any more but got it from Dirk Miller, maybe he still has it. Small lumber yards will probibly want 150-160 roll on 3 ft 1x1 14 gauge. best advice on price is try beating them down on price with 2 or more roll order. Ask if your hardware store has a "red brand" fence catalog. Seems they have a large selection or wire fence types. What will kill you on any source will be shipping. If it comes on weekly truck thruough your local hardware or farm and ranch from their wareshouse, will be best way to beat high shipping.
Are you going to NTA in KS?

14 guage welded 1 by 1 is the ultra cheapo wire. most larger western coons, red fox and coyotes eat it for dinner and ask "any desert? " 14 guage 1 by 1 GALVANIZED AFTER WELDED (GAW), is trhe good stuff. if you are making coyote cages, anything LESS than 1 by 1 -12 and 1/2 guage GAW is a waste of money. in fact if you want lifetime box traps or carrying cages or whatever, the 12 and 1/2 is a must. and the GAW is a must. I have a ton of 3 foot bt 3 foot and misc size 14 guage 1 by 1 gaw used cages I`d sell cheap if anyone wants them as is, or to scavenge for re makes- here in indiana for pick up. I have a bunch of 12 and 1/2 guage gaw cages in wyoming for pick up there. lol, others in ks that are the 14 1 by 1 gaw .

Galv. after weld wire is always the best choice for long term considerations given to weather, urine or other corrosive type exposures. The galv after treatment also strenghtens the wire. Most consumer outlets dont carry a good grade wire that is usually needed for our industry applications.
Animals like Bob W. said are rough on the wire and will test it constantly as you will find out with long term containments of fox and coyote.I have gone to GAW vinyl coated wire for my holding pens for the bottoms. Have some pens now over 25 years old. The cage bottoms take the brunt of things from all the fall out that an animal can dish out over time.
Pee is corrosive and compressed with fecal matter or food material it will hold onto common steel and just eat away on most non galv. wire and too small a diameter in a short time.My pens have a 1"X1" bottom and 1"x 2" sides and tops.Stainless hog rings are also a better investment for long term use on pens or transfer cages.

I don't know how it has been in last 2 years or so- but I always used their gal wire to build above ground beagle pens- and the quality of the gal welded wire from both places stood up well to to urine, and that takes a lot..

those beagles are cage potatoes compared to wild game . a coyote or even wild reds test every weld every night. one weak spot and they get a start, then they can be vamoosky in minutes if they get a place to pull on.

I wsn't saying a beagle would fight a cage like a coyote- all I said was that the welded wire your could but was pretty good stuff-
Probably not too many cage trapping yotes.....

no, but probably 20-30,000 head a year live trapped and held in transport cages or holding pens till the buyer coughs up the dough.

what exactly are you debating?
the question was asked where to by wire for cage traps. I replied by saying where I always used to buy it- and how it held up for me.

then you talked about beagle pens. 12 and 1/2 guage gaw would be superior to the the 14 g non galv for even box traps. the initial cost difference/coon type trap would be maybe a buck, $2 at the most on a ~$40 item. but trappers are so cheap the cage manufacturers are forced to use second rate quality wire. man asked about box trap wire, still maintain 12 and 1/2 gaw is best, that way the cages can double as live carriers etc, as many end up doing down the road eventually, plus no coon would ever tear them up. the bigger western coons eat box traps pretty regular. even wad up the 7 guage triggers and pans. didn`t someone have the trigger mounted OUTSIDE the trap so coons could wad them up? I`m in the market for 1/2 dozen 36" box traps now ,for ks coon ,and would gladly pay hi dollar for box traps as I described.

If you're making cage traps for bobcats/gray fox for use on public lands cheaper is better. And salvaged free materials is the best. ;D
For either species 3x3, 2x3, 2x2, 1x2 or 1x1 all work just fine. I actually prefer the ones I've made out of scrap 3x3 galvanized concrete reinforcing mesh, the wire size is about 1/8" and rigid, they make nice collapsible units.

you are correct on cats, just not fighters. grays, they think they can whip the world and we are lucky they aren`t the size of coyotes or a man wouldn`t be safe in the woods.

I have yet to see a gray fox escape a cage trap though, not my traps anyways.
Haven't even had one chew out of my net traps yet, in fact they get rolled up tight like a wiggy little burrito. ;D
