Alot of the locals here don't know what you're talking about when you mention basswood. They all call it linden or lin. I was going to say something, but I won't. ;D (and I like your style, kevinupp!)

Hern, You don't want it to get too big as it wil go bad on you. The center will turn a dark brown and start to rot. The best way to tell is to cut off a branch and if the center of the branch has a dark spot, the main trunk will already be dry rot. Basswood dry rots fast. HP

I`ve cut a good bit over the years and never seen a 24" tree with a good center, in fact anything over about a foot seems to be funky in the middle. 8-10" to be sure all is good white clear non heart rot. but you never know for sure till she hits the ground.

I really like 14' boards that are 12" wide green, clear and frozen. Makes my heart pump and they are heavy. HP
