I use the original notch but this being square and all is not important as this is the where the dog is when the trap is first set....the new notch is created with the file and YES this needs to be square and true...ect.....The original part of the notch I couldn't care less about other than the trap stays set until I'm ready to plant my trap and pull the pan down to the NEW notch..."night latch" with that audible "click".....clear as mud??

I use a file a bit wider than the notch and take about 3 passes to cut the step. It would take me more time to square up what the dremel left over than to just do it all with the file.
