Mick ... When using wire, get you one of those enclosed plastic wire dispensing spools ... Eliminates the kinking ... You can fasten it to your belt, your bucket/bag, or just keep it in with your setting tools.
With the cable; like the others said, just go with one max. length and fashion an adjustable system to your liking.

I use a different system than that Gary with my camlocks.
No spring involved. I dont think its any better though than that washer system of yours.
All of my new drowning slides for beaver will be made out of chain.
A little more expensive at first and will last a lifetime without the hassels involved with cable.
