I dont want to speak for Steve, but I believe he is saying to place the trap further from the pocket in the water to target coon and miss the mink of which I agree with. Steve?

I think I follow what is being said, but I still don't understand the guide stick. If the trap is in 6-8 inches of water are you targeting front foot?

If I want a front foot catch I set the trap directly in front of the pocket just outside of the entrance to the pocket. For a hind foot I shoot for 6-8 in from the entrance and offset slightly to the left or right. With either placement I prefer the trap to be under at least 5 in. of water and have taken many coon in 10 - 12 in. In fact I have been amazed at times on how deep a trap can be and still take coon. I have never felt a guard to be neccessary but it sure doesnt hurt anything. Just my opinion.... Dave

Dave is correct in summing up what I meant.
In deep water, you don't really need the guide stick as much as shallow water. Even in deep water however, it directs the coon over the trap.
What I was saying is what you need to do to avoid mink.
Now me, I want to keep coon out of my mink sets for one reason- I can/t/won't set up 200+ drowning sets. So I make distinctive coon sets for coon, and have mink blind sets at locatioins within that zone.
For example- a bench coming to the water meeting a high bank. A lured/baited pocket there, will take any coon that comes by. A blind mink set, made along the vertical wall, should take very few if any coon.
As pointed out, this system works better in cold and snow when the number of coon at each stop is limited.

Thanks Guys for taking the time to explain this for me. I think I understand what I need to do. I guess I will try this fall and see what happens. If for some reason I still have some trouble I guess I will have to drive out to where you are so I get a hands one lesson. lol
Thanks Again CHT

Steve and Dave know there business when it comes to trapping. If you ever get to see one of their demos it's worth your time. I think Steve usually goes to the Pa convention so that would save you a drive and Dave has a very good video river trapping coon that shows what he describes here. Thanks guys for all you do for helping others on the lifestyle you love. Dan.
