I have several points on this. First, the statement from the DEC is that we won't be catching the small beaver. What's wrong with that? Better than an empty trap! Also , that we won't catch muskrats. What's wrong with that? Second, I had a small beaver go through a 330, set at a slide, carry a small tree back down leaving it on the bank above the trap. there was no way he got up there without going through my 330! Rick, I sent an email to Gordon complaining that our season was too early, too short because of our unpredictable weather, and that being as early, we are harvesting unprime pelts. Of course, I heard nothing back. I caught 26 beaver last year with offset triggers, but not the modified as now required. This year I caught 4! For better or worse, I have 2 areas where the land owner is getting permits so I will be trapping more beaver. The only plus here, is that now I will be using snares and not have to worry about triggers! Sorry to rant, but this topic just gets me steamed!

I don't think the season here in region 9 starts too early Bob. A little too short maybe, but not too early. I'm also just a "casual" beaver trapper, and didn't even catch any this year.....partly because I didn't feel like like dickin' with my 330s.
But I always thought by Christmas week they were ready....and always did pretty well on mine when selling. Of course, mine always had a conibear bruise RIGHT BEHIND THE EARS!
But in this region, it's a two week season. Bone cold with snow measured in feet. That makes the foot traps.....if not out of the question.....at least ineffective in my hands. 330s have always been the way to go for me.

Good post Rick !! I agree whole heartedly that our season is wayyyyyyyyy to short. With the way that the beaver population is now, I'd like to know why it's as short as it is. I see no need for a short season. Yet if you look at the DEC map you will notice they extended the season south of us, doesn't make sense to me. But then again, not to much the DEC does makes sense.
