I am with Steve on this one. A 1 1/2 cs wired to a rebar stake in deep water. I like to be able to fish for the trap and pull it up with out having to slide the lock up the drowning wire. 99% of my catch is drowned and if a coon is caught--most times it succumbs to hypothermia by morning.... John
PS--I f even think a coon will come a calling then I double up the wire..

My favorite mink water setup is my water coon setup. It consists of a laminated 1 1/2 coilspring with 3' of mid chain swiveled #2/0 chain. I anchor it in deepest water available within that chain length with a 30" T-bar (3/8")with a 5" top. Is an over kill for mink and rat but I have lots of coon that often beat the mink to the set. The first dash to the safety of deep water for a mink or rat is usually it's last as the trap and chain take him down and out. Jim

T bar stakes 2' of chain. Rats mink and coon . I use 1.75s or # 2s. If I don't think the rat or mink will drown I don't set it. In fact I think most mink die of stress insted of drowning.
