If theres no ice, underwater channels aren't any good to you anyway. There's no such thing as an underwater channel unless theres some kind of obstruction on the surface to make the beaver swim on the bottom.

IMHO, Buzz and trappincoyotes35 , got their heads on straight on this one. Trappnman, beaver......... versus BE sets would be a better trade for you. How do you like me now? ;D

What are you trying to say Steve? lol
Ray if you are trapping rivers big or small or ditches there probably wont be a channel leading away from the den.
Only in under ice conditions will I trap in the dens. If it is open water there are many better and easier options to use.

Chris I catch beaver on the bottom too in open water. But you need something on the surface to force the beaver to go to the bottom. Or give them a reason for swimming there.

I dont know about that woodtick.
Yes I prefer to use "dive sticks." But I catch quite a few beaver in open water, on the bottom with nothing to force them down there.

But the beaver would need a reason to be on the bottom, whatever that reason may be? Are you sure you're not catching catfish that look like beaver. hehehe ;D ;D ;D

woodtick it is a travel lane for the beaver, to get from point a to point b, they will hug the bottom, thats why in a soft bottom pond, lake you will have that depression or otherwise known as a channel, made by beaver for beaver ;D. I have traped many sand pits, where they have a channel going from den out to deeper water, or a small backwater or oxbow with beautiful channels on the bottom, yes dive sticks increase your success, but not always needed, exspecailly in nice slicked up well used runs.

Here's the thing about trapping the "den " if you will where the feed pile meets the bank or lodge, if your dealing with a full house your gonna kill a bunch of small beaver. If you got ice your stakes freeze in and there that puppy sets spooking the rest of the beaver that count. Then you gotta figure where they took off to. All this costs me money in the long run,......yes you can say a bigger number when asked how you did trapping . But in truth your average will be crappy when you sell. I see this a lot when Groenewold comes around, I personally am turned off when some clown shows up and half his beaver are small.
