#3 softcatch hold antelope fine. X stakes don`t break or pull. tman, in the west you`ll learn fast to not set waterholes. not just antelope problems, but livestock too. and in the fall seasons the hunters set up on themand either steal or blow up your catch. at least on blm. rather set back on the trails in with less than bomb crator sets and mild smells.

I had a couple of isolated springs down in Death Valley that had so many Desert sheep tracks around it I didn't dare set with 100 yards. Little water holes about the size of a 5 gallon bucket.
Two years later I went back and two big old lions had tracked it up almost as bad. Not a sheep track in sight.
I don't know whether the lions ate all the sheep, chased them out of the country, or both.

Both...though I expect more of the former than the latter....

but them waterholes are so pretty Bob-----you HAVE to set them..
Cattle were no problem, I was working pastures where they had all been moved to shipping paddocks.
learned about the antelope- But it took...2 days...one to say huh!, 2 to move the sets.

I`ve got some pretty neat pics of big antelope in softys. I`ve had antelope killed in a softy by lions twice. neither time could they pull the carcase out and ate what they could and then scratched over the remains with trash. I took the carcases out and they always were gone the next morning, I mean like gone off into outer space or something. had a wolf do that once too. he hauled it 100 yards or so after the release and then ate some more, maybe 20-30 lbs it looked like. next day I went and looked just to see what he would do and that carcase was all the way gone too, carried into the never never land. I never caught the wolf or the 2 different lions in the remade sets. I was real surprised at that, that they never came back snooping around. but I was glad of it. don`t need any troubles, lol, no more than normal i mean. heck, women troubles are bad enough let alone irritations like lions and wolves aggravating a guy. reminds me of the joke about the 3 tents with the harem girl that was frigid in one, the lion with the bad tooth in another, and the gallon of moonshine in the first tent.

I wonder why deer never seem to get caught (and I know some of you have caught deer) but I never have in too many traps snapped by deer. Perhaps its the size of the deer around here? or are the hoof shapes different?

I caught and held a mule deer in new mexico , in a foot trap. that is the only one I ever held, not counting snares of course. couldn`t count the deer I`ve held in snares.

I can only think of one deer for sure and one antelope. I think the slick hooves let them pull out.

I've held young mule deer (in a Duke!), but never a white tail deer in a foot hold trap.
BTW, Those Dukes do hold most lions if properly modified.

Steve, You have too many deer to use a hay set but get very few snapped traps by deer?...(especially since you mist the set with urine)
In PA, if my traps would hold deer I would catch 98% of them. ;D

I held a yearlin doe once in a no 3 sq jaw victor, beefed up. main reason I held it was it was caught just about the hoof.

I once had a deer pop the jaws of an unmodified #3 sq. jaw victor. Our deer tend to be larger than southern deer.
Bob: I don't know that joke.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned some sort of visual to attract the lion.

guy had to perform 3 great feats, cure the frigid harem girl, pull the tigers rotton fang tooth and drink a gallon of the booze. he drinks boozr first, comes out and crowd cheers. goes in tiger tent and great ruckus and terribe noises for an hour. he comes out all beat up and bloody and exclaims, now where is this harem girl needs the tooth pulled? ( short version)
