Coyote I caught the trip before in a bare pan walkthrough. Same set as the cat pic I posted last week.

$15-20 coyotes vs. $250 average on the cats with some as high as $600.

I would rather that coyote wasn't clogging up the set.

It was tightened up a lot more but the coyote took care of that.

Squeaker in the tree, can't see it because of camo tape. Pink fake fur flag in the pic about a foot below the lowest branch.

There is another set up against the rock above this one that you can see fenced into the ledge.

Lure in the bush. Actually I had caught a big tom and a female before the coyote so the set had plenty of natural lure. Now it has more as the coyote has more stink than a cat.

Joel my Coyotes averaged $23.00 and change, yours are way better than mine, hell I'd like to catch about5-6 of them a day while cat trapping, wouldn't that make it worth it??.....B.....

After a day riding the four wheeler, hiking mountains, etc. skinning several more animals for $50-$100 doesn't appeal to me. I only have so much energy.

Cat trapping in the mountains is hard work. Not that other kinds of trapping isn't but I'm bushed at the end of the day.

I'd rather make another set down the road for a cat if I have the time and energy than skin coyotes.

Hey Joel, when i looked at pic my first reaction "man that cat took a long time to go down" I guess I should ask, is that raked down duff above the cat in pic from the cat or just look like it? Not sure so I thought i'd ask. Looks like perfect neck catch w/ high tie-off where cat would be dead in about 3 yanks at end of cable.

Rich that cat died at the end of the cable. The chewed up brush is from cows. It was at the head of a spring in the desert. The sagebrush is 8 feet high and thicker than you can walkthrough. The cows beat the hell out of it getting to the water.

If you look at that cat you can see where another big tom chewed on his neck and lower back.

That cat that did the chewing was a whopper. Actually caught him briefly in a trap up the trail but a couple of inches of crusted snow didn't let the trap catch him well.

Point being even the uncovered sets can be put out of commission by the right kinds of conditions.

Hope to have him soon he should be a dandy.

Nice thing about snares and blind sets is you may get them 20 yards away on their next trip through, as no bait, lure or whatever to associate danger with.

I figured you probibly had the cat dead pretty quick Joel, but that duff above pic had me scratching my head.

Think that big tom will come right back to the location for another look?

One question Joel, Ive had male cats bug out of draw, valley, area, after catching the female they are keeping tabs on during breeding season. Ive seen once she is eliminated, they are heading off to new females and dont return. Any tricks to keep them coming back? Ive had naughty thoughts of a live female in heat, howling and still smelling up the area, in a cage instead of eliminating her. Sometimes maybe I think too hard, LOL.

Joel, I think a certain thick headed German spent a week in Wyoming hanging his flags and lure too low. One 30 pound tomcat made the trip home, but two near miss tracks on pattern ain't sittin' too well. Aw well that's kinda how trapping goes for me sometimes. Did find a bunch of culvert tubes with a center punch hole put in them. Now I wonder who could've made them?

Rich, one thing we used to do on lions that I learned from Pat Wantland was to put some female blood into the urine and squirt it on the scrapes.

Pat claimed the only difference between female urine and female urine in heat was a little blood. I think he learned this from Dale Lee.

Often, a Tom lion will just pass through an area. We would squirt urine mixed with a little blood on the scrapes and that Tom would hang around 2-3 days looking for her.

It works on lions, should work on bobcats.

Punching holes in culverts, 18 volt cordless drill w/ unibit type sheet metal (kinda slow)or or .22 cal solid (faster) bullet and safety glasses, which do you prefer Bob? I found a .44 w/ solids eliminates the need for safety glasses from occasional .22 rickorchets but plays hell on the ear drums, LOL.

Whitney Roper hand powered hole punch w/ 3/8" punch is the nuts, especially near town at 2 A.M.

as long as there is a cat in a trap sitting inside that culvert, I don`t care how the hole "mysteriously" appeared. I just love taking out a cat that thousands of folks have been driving over all day, so many you haver to wait for a break in the traffic to get the sucker out and up and then the speed heave into the truck.
