I`ve noticed after a possum catch, the dunce always eats the bait even after caught, with fox/coyote I can generally relocate the original hole and clean out and bait is still there.

NOW WAIT A MINUTE BOB....if the bait is still there then i guess YOU USE THE SAME HOLE ALSO.....hmmmmmmmmmm intresting...all these guys here pretty much calling me a liar when i say i use the same hole(sure mabey i will have to clean out the loose dirt or some repunch...)well i guess mabey they should think about it awhile b4 they bust on me...because i will bet most of them will use the same hole but haveing to clean it up a bit....AND WITH THAT SAID...if you look at the hole most of the time you can tell if it was dug out b4 the catch with a canine...unless its very wet or very loose soil......hmmmmmmmmmm just mabey im not off my rocker too much am i..........

I`d say maybe 1/2 the time the bait is still there and I just clean the old hole out and maybe rebuild the backing with circle duff. other times no doubt the hole is there but not obvious so it is quicker to just whip in a new hole and set her back up. I`ve gone back to old sets say a month later and found 2 holes dug out where I had made multiple catches and ended up digging a second hole next to the first that I couldn`t find for the re-make. guess when I set back I have a pre-made 2 hole set then. but I still think most pad around a good bit before being caight. On occasion I see a trap froze in and the whole pattern covered with so many tracks it is solid tracks and no pattern left, so I think they stay and stay till they finally get caught- the advantage of a good bait over a one shot scent post set relying on (praying/hoping) the one track in and sniff in he hits it right.

bob i tend to disagree. when i miss them i only get one print left in the pattern. which tells me they come in, take a whiff and split. or come in, pull out the lure holder, lick it clean and move on w/o so much as another relocation of the right-front foot. im sure most of you here have forgot more about trapping than ill ever know however, im calling it like i see it then drawing comclusions.

ahh, but if you had put some of that good goo down the hole they couldn`t just "pull out" they would hang around and shuffle enough to get caught. I`ve had days of 20 canines with no tracks, just 20 and the rest not touched, nary a track, caught ,or never showed at all. that cottonball or wool wad idea has cost a lot of guys thousands of critters over the years

"good goo" eh? do tell! feel free to pm me or im sure there's more than a few trappers here that'd like to know what you're eluding to. ive had days of 5 fox(big deal, right?) and that was it, 5 fox caught and nary a print on the other 5 sets. so, what does that mean? please explain becausese you lost me there. but i did get the fact that you're insulting the lure method/holder i use.

if they are pulling your bait out of the hole its not deep enough to keep them working at it to get caught....

Or if you have a shallow hole, and use a ground bait like Bob use's, and smear it around in your hole...you will keep your target animal there working the set longer, moving his feet working to lick the bait out of your hole...thats why I prefer a ground smear bait instead of a chunk bait.

Dude.....who called you a liar?....not me. I question the part about being able to tell wether or not your hole was dug at......not wether or not you can re-use them. I re-use my dirtholes 90% of the time, maybe more. But I always have to dig 'em back out. They're pounded flat, looks like a hand grenade went off.
Could be you just use a bigger hole than mine too. Mine are dug with an auger, 2" dia. by 11" deep.
Rick.

That's where i run Into problems, I get lazy and don't dig my bait hole deep enough. Most times my bait hole Is destroyed and I turn the set into a walk through Or a trash pile set, sometimes I will spend the time to re dig the hole but not In most cases. I also use a paste type bait and have better luck then chunk bait.

often the ground is frozen or rocky and that 12" deep hole i like ends up being a "dirt dent" set maybe only 2" deep. but like cory says, I use a gooey juicy smearable soak into the dirt semi liquid bait they can`t dig out easily. some guy has tapes and dvds showing this stuff you know!

i must have bigger bad a$$ animals down here compared to pa, because they blow the place apart, upon inspection ive never had the hole visible, many times i can redig in the same spot however digging dirt back in the same spot isnt my idea of telling how much the fox dug at the lure before being caught, i dont use and lure holder or anything to be able to tell, dont really give a chit how much it dug as long as he is caught, w

If you can talk kfc into 5 gal of their grease after their done with it. dig your dirt hole 2"x10" fill it up and leave it for a week. If you have any foxes or coyotes in the area you"ll see what a dug hole looks like.

I think I got a gallon of grease in the last bucket of kfc the boss brought home, but we ate it. if you want to see just why a piece of kfc chicken is 6 trillion calories/ half wing, just let it sit in the frig overnight.
